I just got a heads up from my dealer that a BAS recall in coming for Uly owners. There seemed to be a significant number of failures for there not to be a problem. |

Do you know if there are problems with the BAS on the P3 Blast? I have a 2001 Blast, and it's got a weird electrical problem ~ might be the BAS. It starts fine, runs well, but right around 3 or 4 miles (less if I let it warm up for a while) it just dies on me. Very peacefully, no locking up or sputtering, and I just coast over to the side of the road. Then, for about the next 30 minutes I have no spark. After a while (I'm guessing) whatever "tripped" resets itself, and the bike starts just fine. AAARRRRGGGGHHH! Any thoughts? Also, does anyone know how to bypass the BAS, in case that's the problem? Thanks! |

Check for a plugged tank vent. As gas goes out through the carb, air needs to come into the tank. If air can't come in, then the suction gets too hard and the gas can't get into the carb. When it sits for 30 minutes, the suction in the tank gradually sucks in air until it's even again. Next time it stops, pop the tank filler cap, and see if you hear a little "whoosh", and see if the bike cranks back up (it will take a bit, as you will have to refill the carb). |

Thanks for the idea, but the problem is definitely electrical. We thought gas at first, because it seemed to make the most sense, and went through all of that ~ no problems. Then we pulled the spark plug wire and tested it right after the bike died - no spark. We haven't had the time to make it all the way through the electrical system yet, but going by the specs in our manual we're getting some funny readings at the BAS. I'm hoping to have time to get at it again this weekend, so i figured I'd see what ideas were out there... Thanks for the suggestion, your idea would make perfect sense if it wasn't for the missing spark. By the way, I never got bike repair advice from a mouse before! |

He is a well rounded mouse I'll look up the schematic for my 9sx and see if I can tell if that sensor is normally open, normally closed, or something else. Then it seems easy enough to bypass it (either leave it disconnected or disconnect it and jumper some terminals) long enough to either confirm or rule out that the BAS is the problem. I can't think of much else. Does the blast have a head temperature sensor? I bet it does, it showed up about the same time as those sensors started showing up in the tubers. And can the ECM ever go into "kill the spark" mode? I know if the newer bikes get too hot, they will go into skip spark mode. I am wondering if a bad temperature sensor could be making the ECM think engine death is eminent, and it shuts down the engine. Not sure about the blast, but I had a loose connection going *into* my coil on my old Cyclone. The connector just came loose. It would stall in the rain. |
