Screamin' Eagle SYN3 Synthetic Motorcycle Lubricant, SAE 20W50 US Price 9.95 Japanese Price 24.76 I`m wondering if it would be worth it to put synthetic in my 07 XB. Anybody have any suggestions? |

The general consensus is that synthetic oil is a good thing. Mobil 1 V-twin, Amsoil, and others get good reports also. |

If you feel put off by the price of synthetics then you can feel comfortable in knowing that you can run extended drain intervals than if you used non-synthetic oils. If it costs 1.5 as much, run your oil intervals 1.5 times as long (or more!). This way you're actually saving money and getting better performance by running synthetics... |

Well I just went out and bought 3 quarts of the H-D synthetic brand oil. Buying what is sold in the US and what is sold in Japan is very different. Couldn't find anything mentioned in any of the forums, except the H-D synthetic. Cost me well over $30 a quart, but since I paid so much for the bike I thought I should at least do my best to keep the bike in good running condition. Almost everything over here is 3 times as expensive as the US. Oh well, I'll ship the bike back to the states in the future. |

Those prices are amazing. Is it tariff or what? Are the Japanese bikes prices comparably? If you don't mind me asking, what did you have to pay for the bike? |

Any 20w50 full synthetic engine oil should be premium stuff for protecting your bike. Some are better then others, but if you keep the 3500 mile change intervals, any full synthetic should still be fully effective until you drain it. I seem to remember some of our UK friends indicating they can get a good deal on Shell Rotella... can you get that in 20w50 at a fair price there? I think thats a full synthetic. |

I paid approximately $15,000, but the dealer did throw in a set of bags, seat and cheesegrater eliminator. Overall, I'm very happy with it and I wouldn't have bought if I didn't intend to ship it back to the states in the future. I have no idea why the oil is so expensive. Japan used to be a poor country, but in the 80's like China now, the economy sky-rocketed. Now everything is over priced. I'd move back to the states, but right now my job is more important. Japanese products are usually cheaper and more cutting edge than anywhere else, so Japanese bikes are much cheaper to buy here, but I'm turned off with just being able to go fast. That's why I bought a Buell. A lot of people tend to look when I drive by. The only non Japanese oil that I have seen so far is Castrol. There's been a lot of talk about problems with other brands of synthetics, that's why I decided to buy H-D instead of one of the Japanese brands. |

Some are better then others, but if you keep the 3500 mile change intervals, any full synthetic should still be fully effective until you drain it. We gotta think about this. I use Synth oil in my bike. It gives me a warm fuzzy feeling. The oil is pretty cheap, so I don't feel compelled to justify it economically. On the other hand, Don is paying about $50 per oil change, just for the oil. You change the oil every 3500 miles and after 70,000 miles you've spent $1000 on oil. Now Buell says you can run Dino oil and change it every 10,000 miles. Thats about $140 worth of oil. It would be nice to know in concrete terms what that extra $860 bought. |

I had a hard time justifying the cost too, but in the long run I think it`s worth the added cost. |

My point was simply that cheaper synthetic oil (any synthetic with 20w50 and the diesel API rating) changed at 3500 miles would also be a viable option and give you a good margin. That is what I opted for, though I did buy some Screaming Eagle Syn 3 when I heard they sponsored the XBRR. |

I think that oil analysis is the only real way to determine your oil change interval. BMW now has no recommended service interval for their cars. A clever little on-board analyser lights up a light when it is time to change the oil. Analysis will not only tell you what condition the oil is in it will also tell you what is going on inside by the type of metals and dilution of the oil by fuels , blowby etc. |
