I just recently bought an XB12S for myself for Christmas. I absolutely love the bike and Have had a blast riding it. However, tonight I had an unplanned spill going about 30 mph. I hit a spot of loose sand in an intersection and layed the bike down on it's left side. No major damage except for this one problem. The hole in the side of the crankcase cover where the shifter pivot bolt screws in was broken when the shifter hit the pavement and busted its way out of the hole. Now I am left with a cracked case cover and a broken off half tapped hole. I am a machinist and I do this kind of work every day. I can easily fix this if I can just get it off and get it to my job. I need to remove that cover and I don't know exactly what I am going to run into there. Is there any special procedure for doing this? I know I need to get myself a service manual but I would have to order it and wait for it to come in. I can pretty much figure it out without too much of a problem, I just need to know if I am going to find any surprises on the way to getting it off of the side of the engine. I sure hate this happenned, especially since this bike only has 1400 miles on it, but oh well. It has some small scratches for character now. As for me, I have a very bad wound on my left elbow and a bruised hip. a trip to the emergency room to get my elbow cleaned out and some antibiotics and I'm good to go. I sure am sore though, lol. Thanks for the help guys. If you need pics let me know, but as far as I can tell it looks about the same as the previous year models. |

Hey man, I hate that you dropped it. Glad you didn't hurt too bad. |

What you are referring to is the primary cover. No big deal to remove it. You will need a new gasket as well as a shifter shaft seal to replace it. The service manual has a specific tightening sequence and torque for the screws. If I recall correctly from my Sportster, you also need to back out the primary chain tensioner screw before removing the cover. If you cannot locate a manual, I can relay the pertinent info from my 07 manual. Daves, an online vendor here, can overnight you a book, I'm sure. |

Yup, your lucky it was the left side. Right side removal is a whole 'nother story. Anyway just to put the stupid statement out there. In addition to Khollister's recommendation to just remove it, put a pan underneath prior to pulling or you will have fluid everywhere. Just in case you didnt know I thought I would throw that in there but I am sure you knew that already. |
