Dan: no, we're about on the same page on the pricing issue - not a *real* doctor, you see Tat's kit includes a K&N filter, bracketery, hoses and the plate itself is aluminum (if you have any fabricating skills you could make one yourself). Downside to the stock S2 plate, is that it supposedly will eventually crack. Henrik |

To all who gave me the advice thank you! I went to my local dealer and they had a S2 backing plate in stock!! After a couple of hours of fabricating(the angle is different) I have it all done. You can't even tell I changed it unless you pull the cover. Thanks again |

Once again I come here to seek expert advice from the only source I trust. So here goes, I went to my beloved RS1200 today to fire her up and put some fresh gas in her. Cranked for two seconds and fired right up. Got to the gas station opened the gas cap and looked inside... Then I panicked, turned around, and went right back home. Whatever kind of coatind is inside the tank seems to be breaking down and flaking off, quite a bit of it is floating around in the gas. Although I see no fuel leakage common sense tells me it is going to start soon, besides the fact that the fuel is contamited with little bits of the coating. I have no idea where to go with this, I don't trust the local dealerships with this as they always happen to screw something up. Is there somebody out there that any of you know of that you would send your fuel tank to for repair? Thanks in advance for all of your help. Dan |

I suspect the tank liner material has come undone. You are right to worry about a leak. These tanks are fiberglass with a coating like Kreem on the inside. I won't have time Monday but perhaps Court can make a call and see if there is a suggested repair. I would think anyone who was good with 'glass could clean out the tank and recoat it. Dave |

The other night I drained my gas and and took the tank off, washed it out really good and examined it really closely, it is bad inside. While squirting water inside with the garden hose I watched big chunks of lining material and bits of resin and fiberglass come out with it. So far I have gone to two fiberglass shops that told me they would attempt but would not promise a successful repair. I called the factory today and spoke with Tom Anglim(a very cool and helpful dude)and what I was fearing was real. The tank has to be cut open and all of the old sealant must be ground out before atempting to reseal the tank. He said there was another owner of an older Buell that had this repair done at a shop but could not find his number. He gave me all the info on the sealer kit so all I need to do is find a shop capable of doing the repair properly. If anyone can help I will be most grateful. Dan |

Dan: There are several that I am aware of that are needing to be done. I've been talking to Tom and I have someone in mind who I think is capable of doing it right. If you want to e-mail me your info, I'll see if I can get us a package deal. Court |

Yo out here. Nice , nice, nice site/forum/meeting place. Glad I found ya! I have a question regarding identifying a '97 or any other Buell by the VIN#. How can you do this? I havent been able to locate an online resource of a break down of the code. I am trying to get a screaming deal (only way it can happen) on a Buell. I have been riding my whole life minus the last 5 years, ( my son is 6) an drecently was put on a hire list for a local fire district and promised myself a running bike. I have a '65 BMW /2 in pieces and a '85 Shadow 750 in pieces. I NEED TO RIDE!!!!! I have seen deals on ebay but am a little leary,,, buying sight unseen, but feel thats the only way i can make it work. Sooo, i need to be able to better verify the model by the vin #. I am looking at the S2's and 97' S3's, and it doesnt necessarily need to be pretty, just mechanically sound. Thanks in advnce ( I know someone will know) and happy Buell'n,,,, Jop |

Joplin,S-2's and S-3's are pretty easy to tell apart.S-2's only model years 1995 and 1996.Had big aluminum side plates where footpegs go and a nice aluminum oil tank on left side.Better suspension,a little less hp than S-3,more handbuilt.(This is the one you want--screamin deals seen lately, check E-baymotors and Motorcycle traderonline ).S-3 model started in 1997,less handbuilt/aluminum pieces, more plastic,a little cheaper suspension, still a nice bike, don't know when they became fuel injected. I have 2 S-2's and love them. |

Joplin, Like the Fireman said, and you can't beat an S2 for looks, and the cost is very reasonable (EBay ballpark is around $5000 to $5500). Parkway Blue seems to be a real favorite, so is Snap Red and Pearl White. I like my color, it color-shifts in the sunlight from the dark blue to a dark magenta/purple. Very sound, naturally aspirated, 1203cc Sportster XL engine that has Euro gear ratios, but makes more HP than Sportster. Read some of the EBay descriptions, there are a lot of nice chrome/aluminum/CF/fiberglass goodies on these bikes. Doesn't need a catch can for oil spew and much less susceptible to side case and head oil leaks.(IMO) Plus you can always add the Stage kits (cams, heads, etc.) later for more HP if that is what you want. Go for it!!! Dave |

Joplin,no,not a member. Not really into joining groups.Seems too much like HOG.I just like to ride--no rules.Us Buell riders are, shall we say,a little different(odd).Good luck on the job.Everyone I know that stuck with it got hired.Have to have patience and will. I have seen S-2's going for less than 3500.00. Tbolt,S-2's have Euro front sprocket only,US rear same as the rest.29t front vs 27t. |

Anyone know the following for a 91 RS1200 (5spd)? the factory suspension settings? will a standard Sportster chain fit? What was the stock ignition module? thanks, Josh |

Josh, do you have a parts book? If not Tom at Buell can get you one, if he can't I can. The chain is the same for all RS models as was the ignition module. If the part number is a HD number 12345-67 or some such than it is a stock HD part and any HD dealer has it or can get it. I remember the chain being different than a sportster chain but the module was a stock SE module. Dave |

I have a parts book, but not a Sportster book and was wondering what was compatible (ie aftermarket o-ring or Nickle-plated HD). I also have an SE module and was wondering if it was stock. I need to call Tom and order some stuff like the nylon chain blocks. Thanks, Josh |

If the parts book has an HD part number than I am pretty sure it is a sportster chain. An after market chain will be cheaper and better. A good o-ring, I recall it being a 530 Diamond but it was a long time ago I think the SE was stock but don't really remember. Call your HD dealer and bounce the numbers off the parts person. They should know. |
