Hey guys...brand new here - I tried to do some looking, so if this has been covered somewhere please point me in the right direction. I have gotten the impression that the Spec Ops muffler on a 12 does not need a new ECM. I'm assuming this means that the stock ECM, which utilizes the exhaust valve, will be able to "learn" the new pipe. Is this also the case with a higher flow airbox/filter? I'd like to avoid using the Race ECM with this pipe since it eliminates the valve. I've basically decided on either a Spec Ops or a Drummer. While the drummer looks nice, the Spec Ops looks to have better power delivery, and the dual tips counts big for me as well. Plus, the lower price means a lot. It seems that the $400 Drummer (plus shipping) needs a $200 Race ECM to work, totaling over $600. The Spec Ops looks cheaper on paper at $250, but if I need to spend several hundred dollars on a custom fuel/ignition map, then the economy of it goes away. So the big question is: Will the stock ECM work well with the Spec Ops muffler and a high-flow intake? Any help is appreciated. BTW - the new bike is a 2007 XB12R...black with the red wheels and windscreen. Spring will not be here fast enough! |

The stock computer will be fine if all you do is install the spec-ops pipe. If you go with a k&n filter and cut your air box you may need to re-map. I just installed a spec-ops on my o6 xb12r and I must say I am very pleased. It sounds so very much better than stock and it seems to have smoothed out the motor alot, seems to have more power everywhere also, not a ton but you will notice it. But yeah everything else on my bike is stock and the spec ops works great. You will be very happy with it if that is all you do, if you mod the intake then im not sure but you will probably want to talk to al at american sportbike. Have fun and btw Odie can answer most of your questions too. |

I just got an e-mail back from Odie. He seems to say the same as you - that his pipe will be "ok" with the stock ECM, though you won't get the full potential. Adding the high flow box may or may not cause a lean issue, but agin the full potential will not be there. I'm thinking I'll do the Spec Ops pipe, and then get a TFi unit when I do the intake mod. Coming from a carbeurated background, tuning with the TFi seems like it should be second nature. |

Yeah that sounds like what I would do if I was you. I was actually planning on doing about the same thing as what you just said but after installing just the pipe I'm quite happy with the way it is. Ive lost the motivation to change anything else for now, but in the future who knows. Have fun and enjoy your XB! |

Thanks AJ, and like you, I'll most likely be running just the pipe for a while until the finds can catch up. |

Hey xl, welcome!! I ran all last season with a SpecOPS pipe and a K&N air filter on my 9r. with the stock airbox and ecm, there were no issues at all. The pipe works and sounds great!! c'mon spring! |
