Can someone recommend what is the best fluid for the trans/primary for a 06 xb12r that will spend most of its time on track. |

2007 XB12X Dealer said should use regular oil to break in bike for 5000 miles. He said rings will seat better than using full synthetic. Has anyone heard about this? What about breaking in the transmission with full synthetic??? |

Yeah, Ive heard the same. These engines kinda run hot though. I just got mine at 1200 miles on the clock. I changed the primary and engine oil, just because. I used mobil syn 15W-50 in the engine, and mobile syn 20-50 in the primary. I have had a lot of mis shifts now. I dont know, Im gonna try something else soon. |

This is ripe for endless arguments, let me just throw out a few datapoints to help people reach their own decision. I don't want to argue about it, do what you want. 1) At 5000 miles on an aircooled motor, non synthetic oil has broken down and lost a lot of it's lubricating properties. At 5000 miles, even the best full synthetics are starting to show wear in an aircooled motor. 2) High end vehicles such as Porsche and Vette's break in with full synthetic without a problem. As have many Buellers. 3) Tubers seem very sensitive to what lubrication they run in the gear box relative to shifting quality. XB's seem far less sensitive. If your XB is shifting badly, look at primary chain tension and clutch cable lube and adjust. 4) At 1000 to 1500 miles, both full synthetic and normal motor oil are both performing reasonably well, and if you are changing it at that interval anyway, the non synthetic will cost half as much. (i.e. break in intervals). 5) Gear oil has additives that will make it work and hold up much better in a transmission then motor oil will, but it also has additives that might (we have not conclusive evidence) hurt yellow metals (your shift forks are bronze) or your stator insulation. 6) Harley Davidson Syn3 full synthetic is a very expensive very high quality full synthetic oil, as is their new full synthetic transmission fluid (forget its name). It is a bother to get if you do not have a Harley / Buell dealer nearby. 7) Mobil 1 V Twin full synthetic is a very expensive very high quality full synthetic oil. 8) Mobil 1 15w50 has been run in Buells by about a million people for a gazillion miles with outstanding results. 9) Any full synthetic will be working better then any non synthetic after 1500-2000 miles or so. |

I use HD Formula+ I used syn3 one time in the primary and it looked like crap after about 1000 miles. |

I have used, SYN 3, Mobil 1 V Twin, and Amsoil 20w 50 in an XB primary and I would say that the Amsoil and the Mobil are both great choices, which make for silky smooth shifting. No clutch slippage at all. The Amsoil seems to be more "grabby" with the clutch action, and the Mobil 1 V Twin seemed to be the smoothest for clutch operation. The SYN 3 wasn't bad, but didn't impress me at all, especially considering the price. FYI, my brother has had 3 Harley's and he swears by the Mobil 1. |

What is the price difference between Mobil 1 V: SYN 3: and Amsoil 20w50: Are the first two oils 20w50 also? Thanks! |
