Here the rest of the story....

I had a leaking from rocker box gasket (left side of bike). I pulled the covers and replaced the gasket. When I started the bike, my front header pipe was smoking. The funny thing is the smoke seemed to move down the header as the pipes gained temperature.

Has anyone seen this before? Any ideas on the cause?

Confused in Badgerland,

Dennis

Oil being burned off. The part nearest the head is the hottest so it will "smoke" before the lower sections will.

Even tho you probably wiped the pipe down it still had a thin almost invisible layer of oil film on it.

When I changed the rear rockerbox my header did the exact same thing. I was really freaked out because it was really smoking! I shut the bike down a couple of times and tried to figure it out. After awhile it stopped. I'm guessing that while working on the rockerbox I dribbled oil on the cold header.

Thanks for the input!!! I was a little freaked also. Pretty much figured that there was some residule oil on the header. I let the bike run because I wanted to see were the smoke was coming from. When it stopped smoking, I took it for a shake-down. Seems to be better :)
