Guys, I have a 99 M2 that is leaking oil from the front tie rod mount hole, a friend of mine looked into his brother's Buell and says that this is a pass tru hole that is later sealed with some sort of plug by the factory, but when I removed the tie rod there is no plug and you can see tru the hole, there seems to be a spring or something.
I looked in the manual, but couldn't find any thing related to this. About a week before the leak I passed a speed bump around 60 mph, and my friend tells me that this could have stressed caused the plug to come loose. Have anyone experienced or heard about something like this? I haven't had the chance to disassemble it, but would like to have some information before starting. Your help will be greatly appreciated. Bumping your question. The Manual is no help here. I would like to unscrew that rod to have a look, but I am afraid to damage the last threads of the bolts if there is tension on that rod. And above that: Your friend of a friend had already a look and the through hole was plugged. There must be somebody out there who knows the answers. Hans |

If I remember correctly the bolt requires gasket seal along its threads, and there is a sealing washer used on both sides of the rod eye to prevent oil seeping. Treat it like a banjo bolt and it should seal perfectly. Rocket |

Hi, I have a 99 X1 that suffered the same problem. The reason I got the leak inthe first place if because I slightly overtorked the bolt, and with time, the threads gave way. When I inspected the theads, i found that the bolts only engaged 1/2 of the availible threads. So i got a longer bolt and screwed it in with loctite on the threads and yamabond on the bolt washer. It has stayed tight and dry for 2000 miles. Hope it helps. Regards. |
