I have an 06 uly. I put 3000 miles on it...no ping... not even once. The next thing was to install an original drummer. I put anther 1000 miles on it waiting for the race ecm/filter. No pinging...ever. I install the race ecm and filter, have the tps reset and do the 15 min at ~3750rpm's on the highway so it can go thru the learning process. On my way home from the highway run I come to a stop light. When I take off from the light I hear the dreaded pinging that everyone has been talking about. Since the race ecm install I've put another 800+ miles and have determined that the bike only pings when it's hot. I really don't know where to go from here. Should I put the original ecm and filter back on?? Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated. |

If anybody's interested...... I switched back to the factory air filter and ecm. Did some test runs and couldn't make the bike ping at all. Could it be that the race ecm is not set up right? I did notice that the bike felt quicker with the race ecm, but I'm not sure that I can live with the bike pinging, I mean, it's not even hot out right now and the bike pings once it is warmed up. For now, it's back to the stock parts until I get some more info. One other thing I noticed was the bike returned to idle really slow with the race ecm and filter. It would hang up around 2000 and then come down slowly. With the factory parts back on the bike it returned normally. Anybody with any kind of info or advice please let me know what you think. thanks, chris |

I wonder how much the race ECM bumps up the timing? To much timing advance is what would normally causes a ping. I'm confused on what works well and doesn't work well with aftermarket exhausts. I'd like to try one but don't want to sacrifice any driveability. |

The race ECM adds an average of 4-6 degrees advance in the midrange RPMs above 31% throttle, and an average of 1.5-3 degrees in the higher RPMs above 31% throttle. No advance is added below 31% throttle, and none in the lower RPMs. I'd get the static timing checked, as that advance on top of the race ECM timing could make a marginal condition ping happy. I run a race ECM in my Uly, and we've run race ECM ignition maps in stock ECMs. Some ping, some don't. Mine doesn't. It's one of the great mysteries of our time, I'm afraid. My micron remapped race ECM equipped Uly has only two drivability issues, neither that big a deal. When warming up, I get one or two intake coughs in the first 5 minutes. And on a hot day with a hot engine, my idle sometimes hangs high a bit. But it pulls hard and evenly top to bottom, I've got no no ping and no complaints about street drivability at all. Al |

Thanks for the info. I'll have to leave it stock for now, I'm in the middle of moving.......you never realize how much stuff you have untill you move!! When I had the race ecm installed, the bike's throttle response was great. Seemed to have more power. I just hated the way the bike would ping. I hope it is as simple as a timing adjustment. |
