hey i have an 00 m2 and it burns about a quart every 1000 miles, it pops the oil filler plug our as soon as you rev it (with out the seat on)and with out the filler plug in place you can see it bubling in the oil bag. i have no idea why, i think the rings didnt seat but if some one has an idea before i tear the motor down i would appreciate it. you can contact me at sdunkf@hotmail.com thanks jim | ||

Being as you are new to BWB, I'll post this and please do not take offense if it sounds overly simple: Buells are REALLY easy to overfill and the top mark on the dip stick is generally way too full. Mine is happy about 1/4 of the way between the bottom and the top mark. Overfilling the oil has been know to blow the cap off underneath the seat. And, the bike will ingest oil though the breather system (much more than normal) when it is overly full. The bubbling in the oil tank is normal. Make sure you only put exactly as much oil in as the manual calls for. Then warm the bike up and note the position on the dip stick. This should be your new *full mark. The marks on the dip stick are all but irrelevant. If this isn't your problem, you'll have to wait for experts to weigh in. Good luck. (Message edited by naustin on October 31, 2006) | ||

The top of the dipstick just touching the oil is my favorite level. Measuring hot, bike on a flat place and immediately after turning the engine off. Hans | ||

Yes, to add to the above, you must only check the oil after the engine has run and warmed up, then only immediately after shutdown and with the bike on level ground and upright. | ||

Jim, In your present situation, I would run the bike at a quick idle for about 10 minutes with the filler cap off. That is to get all the oil out of the sump and in the lube system and oil bag. Then I would drain the oil using the normal oil drain. Then I'd put only two quarts back. That will be a slight overfill (a few ounces) because of the oil that was in the filter. Then warm it up again, put the filler cap on and see if it says in place. It it does, ride it a least 10 minutes. As soon as you return from the ride stop the engine and with the bike on the side stand on level ground, and check the oil level. Like Hans says, it will probably be just barely touching the tip of the dip stick. From that point on, check the oil immediately after riding or a longer warmup and don't add any more oil than it takes to bring it too the same amount seen above. Ignore that groove in the dip stick, it is pretty much meaningless. That quart of oil was probably being blown out somewhere because of the overfill, are you not seeing any oil anywhere? Like under the rear fender, on the wheel, maybe dripping from the air cleaner? Jack | ||

On my M2, it was exactly what Hans was describing. I could put as much oil in as I wanted, and the bike would puke it out the breathers until it got to just touching the tip of the dipstick. It would then stay there forever. So I just filled it that full and left it there, checking it occasionally. | ||

That's what all three of mine have done--puke out oil until they reach the level they want. I think it's pure engineering genius, a self-leveling oil system! rt | ||

You guys should have bought an S2...they never blow the dipstick out of the oil tank and are dang near idiot proof when filling. BTW, they don't have a "bladder" (snicker), they have a hand made aluminum oil tank. jimidan | ||
