I'm getting ready to service the front forks on my '04 12S at 17K. I skipped this at the 10K service and have been feeling a clank on rough roads for about the last 500 miles so it is now time to do it. I got the tool set from traxxion dynamics and 2 bottles of Maxima cartridge oil. Shaking the bottles sounds like water, pretty light weight stuff. Says 125-150 (7Wt) I know the service manual says HD type E, I find it hard to believe the same oil that goes in Harleys damper rod forks is the best for the upside down cartridge fork. My question is what is this going to do to the fork settings after changing to a different oil? I am about 175 lbs. and use the book settings, pretty happy with overall fork performance. BTW, when I asked the head of the service dept. at one of the area dealers that I use for parts about the 10K service, he said they wouldn't do the fork oil at 10K. I'll do my own work, thank you. |

Jim the type E oil is pretty thin too about like automatic transmission fluid. Hey take a look at this http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/3842/191294.html?1145666393 It could be the source of your "clank" |

Thanks, I'll look close tomorrow . Man, that front motor mount looks nasty. I have 3-4 months left on my warranty, too. Probably end up buying it if I need it. Not worth the hassle of going to a dealer. Mine only clanks when I have to ride down a washboard road at work, about 1 kilometer. Used to be faster was better, still good for about 45 mph, til I get to the loose sand at the end. I'm thinking about a set of Uly tires next tire change. I think type E is the equivalent of 15 wt. or maybe 20 wt., I don't remember exactly, from my HD daysThanks again, Jim |

Type "E" is the correct weight. I used the Maxima Type "E" (I think it's 5 or 7 weight, but in any case, it's the same weight as what Buell fills the forks with). It feels better than stock at the same settings. I've ridden it pretty hard since the rebuild and haven't noticed any real difference in the forks other than the fact that they feel "new" again. |
