Anybody come up with a cardboard or plastic strip-type oil level dipstick? I'm thinking of a 1/4 inch wide tee-shaped piece of cardboard that has graduation marks on it, dip it in the dipstick hole until the tee hits the edge, pull it out, check it and throw away. The plastic dipsticks that come with the xb12 are a PITA. Thanks |

I sometimes take the plastic dipstick and press it onto a paper towel or a piece of newspaper. The oil level shows up readily there. And it costs nothing. The cardboard thingie sounds like a good idea, but that's just one more thing I'd have to carry around. I always have a paper towel in my jacket. Thanks for being creative. |

someone came up with one for a Blast that involved a soda straw with 2 marks on it. You put the straw into the oil, cover the top , pull it out, and read it. It might be a little harder for an XB because the dipstick goes in sideways. But you could probably come up with something similar. Soda straws are nice because they are clear and cheap. |

Another way to make the dipstick more visible, is to cover the lower part of it with a light color shrink tube. I originally posted this solution several years ago, and it is still working. I used a NAPA yellow tube part number 784663. The particular Buelligan may want to select a shrink tube color to match his bike, ( Unless it is black of course:-). Another effective way of reading the oil level is to use a wooden coffee stirrer, and compare the oil level to the dipstick. |

Thanks for the picture and suggestion, I like the idea of a bright color on the stick, its also a permanent fix that doesn't need gradations. |
