Money is tight so i am upgrading in steps. Already have the K&N, was thinking about making my own Open Air Box. I am planning on a Drummer and Race ECM....money just isn't there yet. Just want to make sure my bike isn't going to run too Lean until i get the other Mods on the bike Maybe it would be better just to cut some holes in the airbox instead? Also...does nobody worry about rain water getting in the intake when you get caught in a storm. Seth |

The open air box mod is a fairly linear mod. The percentage of fuel needed to make it run at stoich in the AFV learn mode is reasonably correlated with the percentage of fuel needed at higher thottle settings, so it shouldn't be a problem. The AFV compensation mechanisms will cover you just fine. Water just isn't an issue. When I crashed my S3 up on Mt. Evans back in 2001, it took the entire air filter right off the side of the bike. I rode home in the strongest downpour I've ever ridden in, and it didn't miss a beat. That was with NO air filter at all. There is no way any significant amount of water will get through the air filter and down the throttle body and cause any problems. I would, however, consider re-oiling my K&N filter after riding in a serious downpour. Al |

I'm looking at doing the same mods as Rocktoy to my XB9SX. Will the race ECM be totally necessary for these mods? If so how much will the ECM help/hurt fuel mileage? |

I do not know if an open airbox makes the bike run lean, but I know this :IT RUNS MUCH FASTER from low to high rpm. I have just installed the new airbox cover with the holes/guts to my 04 XB12R, which had the solid cover. It took 5 mins and you keep the breathers in place. It also costs $40 and you keep the old cover. Now the bike is FASTER and sounds better. So far I have done the following mods (one step at a time) to the intake of the bike, and each time there was better performance. 1. K&N filter (improvement) 2. Then remove the snorkel (improvement) 3. New airbox cover with cuts/holes (big improvement) I went for a ride with a friend who has a Suzuki GSX1400 and he also noticed that the XB was faster this time. GREAT STUFF !!! |

^ Did you cut holes in the outer, colored, airbox cover, or is all of the air just coming through the frame? |
