How many miles did you have on your bike before you changed to synthetic oil? Is the first service (1000 miles) too soon. |

Can - O - Worms!!! After the break in period, ~ 500 miles, and you'll be fine. Some folks don't even think you need to bother with a "dino-oil" break in, but I do it because synthetics are too expensive to just throw away. |

I agree, I also would change the oil during break in far more often than normal. Like, 250, 500, 1000 miles, just to purge any metal bits right away. Going synthetic sooner just costs more, ( but will NOT IMHO hurt anything but your wallet ) since you should not be overheating during break in. Use good oil, that meets spec, period. |

I change to synthetic at 500 miles, then do a follow up change at 750 miles, and another at 1500 miles. Then I go to a 2500 mile schedule...and I NEVER change oil, without changing the filter. |

Cycle shack (a shop here in town) recommends no syn until 6 or 7k. Crotchrockets can be done earlier. I like kendall at autozone. I can afford to change the oil at the 1500 mile mark everytime. then I change filter every other change. |

I made the change at 1k to Syn3/Formula+. I just turned 5k and haven't had a single problem. No leaks, clutch issues, doesn't seem to use any at all between changes, and I won't say it runs cooler but it I don;t seem to notice the fan as much, though that could be due to the engine loosening up as it broke in. I think that as long as you use a quality product that is recommended for you application, and follow good oil-x etiquet(intervals/and attention to detail) your Buell will be just fine. $.02 |

I'm with Sloppy... I did a 500 mile oil change from what came from the factory, but used non synthetic (Castrol 20w50 I think) because it was just coming out again at 1500. At 1500, I used more of the non synthetic because it was coming out again at 2500. From 2500 on I have been using full synthetic of some sort. If I use Castrol full syn 5w50, I consume oil at a very high (but within spec) rate. If I use Mobil 1 15w50, I consume oil at a very slow rate (maybe 1/3 quart every 5 to 7 gas tanks or so). If I use Castrol 20w50 full synthetic (which retailers are finally carrying around here again) I'll add oil maybe once or twice in my 2500 - 3000 mile oil change interval. Running 2500 mile oil change intervals with full synthetic is probably overkill. I could probably do 5000 mile intervals, and would in a pinch (long road trip or something). If my Buell dealer was on my way to or from work and not a special trip out of my way, I would consider using the screaming eagle full syn, and probably going with slightly longer change intervals. It's more expensive then the castrol 20w50 syntec I am using now, but its top of the line stuff, and it supports you local dealer, and they kicked in some money for the XBRR race program. |
