Anyone ever use Hi-Temp Thread Sealer by Permatex on theirs Breather Bolts that tapp into the heads????? I could'nt find the "Hylomar" product that the manual calls out, so I used this thread sealer. Seems like it works well for oil leaks, but never sets up. It seems like it will always stay soft and "gooy". Is it possible for this stuff to leak down into the heads????? Any advice is appreciated! Thanks!!!!

That's exactly what I used on my breather bolts as well as customer bikes. It should set to a firm consistency if you let it set long enough. Don't use too much, it's like Brilcream; a little dab'll do ya. Also works well on drain bolts.

And whatever you do, DO NOT USE TEFLON TAPE!

The Hylomar Buell used on the tank cover on my '96 S2T has yet to set now 10 years after the bike was built - still sticky, tacky and generally making a mess. Just a point of reference. Don't know how Permatex compares to Hylomar.

Local dealer Dudley Perkins had one old tube of Hylomar on a back shelf, it was about $9. So that's what I got, I'd never heard of it before.

I understand that the oil sealing is the key her, so might as well use the stuff you got, should be no problem.

Hylomar is top stuff, developed by/for Rolls Royce originally, I always have a tube in my toolbox along with a cereal box & a small pair of scissors, make my own gaskets when necessary & they always hold.

'And whatever you do, DO NOT USE TEFLON TAPE!'

Why? I used two layers of the yellow gas service Teflon tape on mine and it was fine for several thousand miles. Maybe you meant don't use it unless you do it carefully?

I leave two or three threads exposed, wrap the tape in the right direction and smoothly, press it down into the threads with a finger nail, and screw the breather bolt in.

None of the Teflon tape gets beyond the bolt and into the oiling system if that is your concern. When I removed the bolts the Teflon tape came out with the bolts in long strings, none of it went into the engine.
