Chris,
If all you want to do is remove the clutch basket with out dissassembling it, you don't need a special tool.
You just need a snap wring pliers to remove the inernal snap ring that hold in the clutch release bearing.
Under there is a large nut.
Remove it and the whole clutch basket comes off as a unit.
It's a left hand thread so make sure to go the right way (backwards from normal to loosen).

Chris,

If you are talking about the locking bar that engages the primary chain teeth on the crankshaft and clutch basket so that the LEFT HAND THREADED clutch nut and the compensator nut can be removed, those are easily make from a piece of 4" long by 1 or 1-1/2" wide piece of metal that is 1/4" or so thick. The ends can be rounded a little with a file to match the gullies in the sprocket.

Send me a mailing address to "jacker at midmaine dot com" and I'll send you a free locking bar made from fibreglas. It worked fine for me.

The clutch nut is 1-3/16", a 30mm deep socket will work too. You have to remove the compensator nut (I forget the size, 1-1/4"?) on the end of the crankshaft and then the alternator rotor, primary chain, and clutch basket can all slide off in unison.

The compensator nut is a right hand thread and needs some attention to detail on cleaning, degreasing, applying red LocTite, and proper torque specs when you put it back. It can loosen itself if that is not done right. Details can be found in the KV.

You'll have to defeat a little magnetic pull to get the rotor to slide off but it normally comes away easily.

Jack

Hogs,
The info you received above is all right on the money, but if I understand you correctly you want to take the clutch plates out individually. If indeed that is what you are referring to you will definitely need to make or purchase a tool to relieve the spring tension so you can remove the retaining clip.

Thanks Chris

Hogs, I've seen some describe said tool made from bits'n bobs from the plumbing dept. at Home D. Can't remember exactly what and how though.

Motion Pro makes a tool as well - not cheap though.

Hogs,

More background on spring plate failures and reasons to replace them:

http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/47623/207681.html?1151081650#POST 681058

And here is the thread with photos of home made clutch spring compressing tool:

http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/47623/193459.html?1148254375#POST 642880

You'll see Denfromphilly in those threads, he bought a compressing tool and offered to lend it out if I recall right. You might PM him and see if I understood that right (I don't want to put any words in his mouth).

To PM Denfromphilly, find one of his posts, click on his name and you can PM him from his profile.

As an aside, those two threads are under the Old School Buell topic. That made the threads and the info in them hard to find. Another case where the threads should have been started in the KV under Clutch. Or maybe even moved there later?
