Congrats on the great RSS Daniel! Looks like a nice one. Lornce ... "A '96-'98 S1 uses a Sportster motor with screamin eagle cams, shaved flywheels, big valved and ported 883 heads, right?" No ... the Lightning head is an XLH1200 head with a different chamber. Ports are the same, but the Lightning chamber has 10 degree squish shelfs and less volume, it yields 10:1 with flat tops versus 9:1 for the XLH1200 piece. An 883 head is a whole different animal though. Small ports and a low chamber roof with longer valve stems. "The '98 S1W and S3T have "Thunderstorm" heads and pistons, but what about cams and flywheels?" Same as the Lightning motor. "What state of motor is in a '97 S3?" Lightning motor just like the S1. |

BD, can't you just try your S2's plate and see if it fits? What do you mean goofy? Got a camera? Head questions, I think we need photos, diagrams and a matrix in the KV. Hmmm, anyone got pics of the different heads? |

Josh, Yes, I could just try the S2 backing plate but I was actually hoping somebody could tell me if there is a screaming eagle version available since S2 stuff is getting very difficult to find. I will take some pics of it this weekend. But doesn't yours have a strange foam type element in it?? Not the typical oval air cleaner. |

I think we purchased Screamin' Eagle air cleaners and backing plates form HD for those bikes. We may have drilled a hole in them for the PCV hose. |

Court, how come I have a 1995 S-2 California model(with Quiksilver carb and that wonderful carbon cannister)bought in july of 1995,built in march of 1995. And Buelliedan,I just bought another S-2 backing plate(non-CA one) recently with no problem. Now the CA one I tried to get --they kept sending me the non CA one with a CA # on it.They are totally different. |

BD, I've only ridden it so far. It's now too cold to go into the garage so the bikes are on Battery Tenders awaiting 40-50deg weather. But just for that I'll try to look tonight and see. Anyone got an answer to my support-the-bike-when-replacing-the-exhaust-part question? |

Josh, Isn't that part on the nut side of the bolt?? If it is you won't need to worry about supporting the bike since you will only have to undo the nut but not remove the bolt. I will look at mine tonight and give you a more definitive answer. |

Dan; if the backing plate you need is similar to the S2 version, Tat at ASB has a nice aluminum replacement for a reasonable price. Henrik |

Henrik, A doctor and a soldier obviously have a much different idea of what a reasonable price is. That backing plate from Tat is $150. Ouch!! |

BD, it is the nut side, thanks. I don't know what you're talking about on the air cleaner, mine has a Screaming Eagle setup that looks just like my Sportster's, complete with the 2 holes for the vents. 'Course on mine the vents are run to atmosphere and the holes were left open (maybe I should block those off). Josh Does that answer your question? |

Looks to me like a stock Sportster aircleaner setup. I'll see if I have one for comparison. Is there a p/n anywhere? |

How about a better picture of the backing plate? 2 "working girls" on a NYC street corner see a tourist holding a camera and watching them from across the street. Says working girl #1: "What do you suppose he's doing?" Working Girl #2: "I think he's trying to focus" WG#1: "Both us?" |

Well my 96 Sporty had a 29331-96 but I'd bet that's a stock Sporty part. In fact I think that's a turned upside down Sporty backing plate as well. |

Forget the upside down comment but I'd still say it's a stock Sportster part. ...Though they would have neded to redrill the 3 mounting holes and bowl vent.

I haven't told you guys yet but during shipping they put a couple of scrtaches in the tank just in front of the seat. It is insured by the shipping company so I think I will be okay but heres the question: Paint code for a black 92 RSS1200. Is it the same as the 95 S2 black?? I think the S2 has pearl in it but the RSS does not looklike a Pearl. I might just be able to buffout the scratches but I will get estimates for a paint job to cover myself for later. |

Q: Paint code for a black 92 RSS1200. Is it the same as the 95 S2 black?? A: No. E-mail me the V.I.N again and let me see what the gig is. I suspect it was painted by Excalibur. I can find out. Q: Fireman Jim asked...."Court,how come I have a 1995 S-2 California model(with Quiksilver carb and that wonderful carbon cannister)bought in july of 1995,built in march of 1995. " A: Buell History |
