I have 2002 M2 and I'm wondering what torgue and horsepower I can gain by just changing the original air filter to a higher flow filter (if there is one that fits the stock air box) or would it be better to get a new Buell Pro air cleaner kit or a some other air cleaner kit. I also plan to put a different muffler on at the same time.

Polekat:

K&N makes a stock replacement filter for about $49. Works great. Add this and a good slip-on exhaust and re-jet the carb and you will like it. With a D&D slip on, expect a bunch more midrange. See my post under 2001 M2 jetting for jetting suggestions.

Eastexsteve,THANKS! I read your post and have been going through the knowledge vault reading. There is a lot of helpful information here. I'll be putting the Buell Pro air cleaner on and am trying to decide on what muffler. I'd like a muffler that will flow better than the stock muffler, but do not want a major increase in the noise level. I'm looking at the Borla or Whileyco carbon fiber mufflers.
Thanks again.

Hey Buelled ones. I'm the newbie just got back from riding my 98' S3T from Phoenix to Seattle. Freaking thunderstorms the entire distance!!

Here's my question: I have read up on the air filter upgrades and the 'stock' Buell Pro-race job gets good reviews. There was mostly chatter on the Force intakes, but I don't like them. Has any one got experience with the Kuryakyn Hypercharger? ( http://www.kuryakyn.com/prodlist.asp?bn=harley&cn=Air+Cleaners )I like the looks of it, but am not sure if the airflow is suffecient with those butterfly intakes. I also can't tell which model will fit my engine, since I'm new to the Buell. Please advise me on this air intake system as soon as you can, since I have an oportunity to get the Pro at a discount now.

Stephen-
At our last BRAG meeting we had a speaker who trains 75% of the HD/Buell dealers to properly use their Dyno machines. He has tuned thousands of bikes and claimed that the best you could do was the ugly, ol' breadbox that came with your S3T. Put a K&N filter in there and forget about it.

If you just hate that thing, he also said that the pro-series cleaner wasn't bad. BTW, he also said that the Force actually restricts airflow. He didn't care for the Hypercharger either.

Hope that helps-
Brad

The Force as they have been delivered lately is not a good choice, unless they have been listening here and addressed the problems. They need Aaron's mod, then porting the interior to match the carb throat. I use one and love it, but it does need work, like most things Buell.

Thanks for the advice Brad. I bought a new Buell Pro-race kit on Ebay for $165, which is $100 less than the dealer, so did not get the Kuryakyn. I will get this installed and then think about carb jetting and silencer options. I am lucky that one of the guys at the local Harley Boutique is a Buell owner and enthusiast. He has given me some unbiased advice (at least I feel he does). I had them look up my VIN# and found all but the gas tank fastener Service Bulletins have been performed on the bike. The front rubber mount on the silencer is shot, so need to replace that as well. Other than that, the bike runs splendid and performed flawless on the 2000 mile trip.

Is there any reason that an air cleaner assembly that fits any XL model H-D can't be used on a Buell with a stock CV carb?

Lake, as long as it's a late model XL it shouldn't be a problem.

Here's an attempt to get a little better airflow through the 'ol S&S aircleaner...

trimmed S&S

I figure it should still stay pretty dry in the wet...and later I'm going to use a hole saw to drill a hole in the empty space in the back of the backplate, too.

Hi - If you cut the beauty rings off a CrossRoads air filter, leaving only the filter and the front and rear mounting plate - would this setup be light enough to run without a support - like the CF version is supposed to? Just Blasting on the Dark side! EZ

hey - RPM said they would be willing to make a CF short stack (found stack filters;0)) - how tall should I make it - 1" , 1 1/2" , or 2". Just Blasting on the Dark side! EZ

Whatever you get make sure it has...or you get... some kind of velocity stack. Even a just a short flange type like the ones ASB sells. Those little filters with the base close to the front of the carb tend to hinder the flow to the air bleeds and the slide air passages on the front of the carb. The bigger the better...pretty much.

Thanks Rick you've helped me more than you know and I figure a modified booty/sock cover for stacks will act as filter, although I plan to get the other type also and see if a little modifying could make it work while avoiding those issues.;0) Just Blasting on the Dark side! EZ

I've considered something similar...velocity stacks and a fine mesh for filtering...it would basically be the only way to allow enough airflow through such a tiny orifice...old racebikes and some UK streetfighter guys are doing it...but after seeing all the crap my foam oil filter element picks up, there's no way I'd do it! By the time you have a proper filter medium it'd be overly restrictive. Seems like on a Blast a YoDude or Force (with the proper bowl vent) aircleaner would work well. Maybe you can find a guy tossing a breadbox. Take the snorkel, plug the big holes with some bonded-on sheetmetal and buy just the filter and rain sock for around $65. You'd have to run the bowl vent into the intake, too...but a little creativity with tubing or epoxy can fix that. I was going to do this for the S1 but I'd rather have the 24/7 rain protection of a covered aircleaner.

The sock is suposed to stop particles as small as .oo5" - its a micron material - you figure you get a couple and switch them out monthly, or after a long ride, they clean w/ regular soapy water. Just Blasting on the dark side! EZ

Really? What's your source for the socks? Tell me how it turns out! I imagine you'd get a pretty fierce intake honk outa that kind of setup. I wonder how restrictive that'd be with such a small inlet/filter area. If you get some gains, though, I wanna know

socks - http://www.cas4.com/Carburetors-Intakes/Air-Cleaners/Velocity-Stacks/carburetors-air-cleaners-wimmer-velocity-stack-filters.html - I'll let you know - I figure pick up about 5 socks and one of the others to experiment with with that torque short stack that ASB sells. Just trying to figure out carb suports from over the carb to carb. Blasting on the Darkside(and thanks for the lead)! EZ

I have the H-D velocity stack and have wondered whether the ASB item might produce any measurable results. Has anybody done a comparison on the dyno?

I bought a Forcwinder intake a couple of months ago for my 02 Cyclone. I still haven't put it on the bike since I was waiting for slip-on that I just ordered yesterday (picked up a Wileyco Titanium for $250). After reading Aarons thoughts on the forcewinder I think I would like to carve out the bowl vent. The only problem is I don't really have the right tools and I don't feel very comfortable hacking up my Intake. Who should I take it to to get this kind of work done? Should I trust my dealer? They don't seem very Buell savy, and I'm not sure they would do it anyway. Any thoughts on how I can get this done properly?

Thanks for the info.
I actually have a dremmel type tool. For some reason I thought I would need something bigger.

Any more info on the type of bit/attachment you used and exactly how you went about it, how deep to carve and so forth would be appreciated. I'm a little nervous about it (hence all the questions) but I think I may try to do this.
Thanks,

Breadbox contest? I was thinking to keep the Airbox, I like the kneeroom/place to toss stickers. SO. Question is after I reroute breather to catch can & seal back of breadbox, do I a) toss most internals, use venturi ring & k&n replacement filter. b) pull stock filter housing, use stock snorkle w/forcewinder type k&n c) pull stock filter housing use stock replacement k&n with stock snorkle. (whew! tired of typing the word stock lol) Which combo gives best power?

I figure I can always get a Forcewinder, But it rains here a Lot. Besides I could always hinge the breadbox, install a mossburg type combo lock, & holster for the .45, I mean cellphone.

Anyone been having problems with their air intake temp sensors? The original one in my 2000 x1 lasted about 12000 miles or so, but the new one only lasted about 6 months. I've checked the wiring to the ecm and it's all good (0 ohms). I didn't check the original IAT. I just replaced it. According to the manual, there should be resistance values across the terminals of the IAT which vary with temperature.
The IAT I have now shows infinate resistance (open circuit) Maybe I just got a bad one?

Aesquire - Here's what I did on my '97 S3: After a rather unique reroute of the breathers, I discarded the snorkel and the air filter "box" and installed a H-D venturi ring. The H-D part costs about $1.25. Add one K&N filter. Then I took a piece of 3/16 inch alloy plate and made a "holder" for the air filter. The air filter holder is just big enough to accommodate two holes for the original air filter box bolts on either side of the filter. This arrangement makes the airbox just an airbox and not a noise control device, so you can enjoy that pleasant intake honk when you crack the throttle. I get instant throttle response and as much as 63 mpg.

Wow, I did it! As you can see, I made the stock breathers into tee-fittings. You can clearly see that the lower legs of the tee are attached to clear catch tubes with drains. The upper legs are plumbed to a double-barb breather filter tucked up under the rear bodywork. The stock snorkel and air filter can are discarded. You can see the H-D venturi ring and the side of the K&N air filter. I don't have a photo of the plate I made to hold the air filter in place readily available, but I may have one that I can scan. I'll have to look...
