Hello,
I need to replace my clutch cable. Can anyone explain in plain English how this is done? I have the manual but would like to hear it in English. This is on a 2000 M2 Cyclone. I'm assuming that I don't have to drain the fluid, correct?

Thanks in advance

You should not have to drain the fluid.

I think the manual does a good job of explaining but in short and as I recall it:

1) loosen the clutch cable at the adjuster in the middle of the cable. You'll likely have to slide the rubber boot aside.

2) slip the cable end out of the clutch lever. Should be easy now that the cable is loose.

3) pop off the derbi cover/clutch cover. The clutch cable should come with the cover.

4) you'll find the clutch cable end attached to the lever/ramp assembly behind the clutch cover. Take the cable off the lever and be careful not to loose the little spring between clutch cover and clutch adjustment nut.

5) remove old cable from clutch cover and screw the new one in. NOTE: BE CAREFUL !!! not to over-tighten the new cable. It is *very* easy to strip the threads in the clutch cover.

6) re-attach and adjust per manual.

Keep in mind this is from shaky memory, but I think I got most of it right. Hopefully others will chime in if I missed something important. Please remember all the usual warnings: YMMW, "know thyself", I'm not a mechanic and don't even play one on TV etc. etc. : )

henrik's got it right

two hints/best practices

1 when removing the derby cover, slightly loosen all the fasteners first -- do not remove them one at a time, or the remaining fasteners may be difficult to remove

2 throw away the torx head fasteners -- they are punishment for your behavior on a date with some sweet young thing (willing or not), and will bedeveil you each and every time you need to access the clutch mechanism

3 replace aforementioned fasteners with allen heads (preferably stainless, available at your local hardware emporium) -- this will not atone for your previous churlish behavior, but WILL move the site of your punishment elsewhere -- hopefully, someplace that does not need frequent attention
