on october 5 2005, a guy cut me off and slammed his brakes, and then took off as i was sliding, and my 2005 raven r6 was tumbleing down the highway i skimped on gear and got a technik supervent mesh jacket, coretech dx gloves, and i wore a shell helmet and regular blue jeans with a pair of lugz boots. i want to stress the importance of good leather gear to people, because its not fun sliding across the pavement. these wounds came from an average 40-50 mph crash WEARING A MESH JACKET! the first pic shows the importance of wearing a jacket that will zip to pants, or a one piece, because when the jacket rolls up it doesnt do much good. the second pic shows the importance of good gloves and not crappy ones. the third ones shows that blue jeans arent good enough. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v...d/crashpics.jpg another pic to show importance of good gloves.. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v...d/crashpic3.jpg proof that mesh does not hold up very well... http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v.../crashpics2.jpg please remember, dont skimp on gear just to cut cost, its not worth it, believe me, especially when your wounds heal themselves to the bandages, and the only way to get them off was by ripping them off....not a good feeling. here is one of the bike i figured i would just throw in.. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v...ike_crashed.jpg |

Robbie, Glad to hear you're OK. I couldn't pull up the pictures, it said they were no longer available. As a wise man once said when asked why he was wearing leathers in the middle of the summer "I always dress for the fall." Brad |

i will try to get the pics working. i read a signature somebody had on a different forum that said "if you dont wear gear, go outside, place your knee on the asphault, and slide it for 6 inches....now imagine if that 6 inches turned into 45-75 yards at 40 mph or more all over your body. |

Ouch I feel your pain. I used to live in San Diego, and caught grief from my riding buddies for my ridiculous ideas about wearing leather when it was "too hot" for that. I got hit head-on by a car, I was not at fault, turning out of a parking lot from behind a building. It nearly killed me. Had I not been wearing my gear there is no doubt I would be dead. The police were certain I would die on the table and kept a major road closed down for hours waiting to see if there would be a manslaughter/homicide investigation initiated. The same guys that used to refer to me as "the gear nazi" now wear good quality gear....every time....no matter what the thermometer says. As it says in my profile: "It is NEVER too hot to save your own skin. wear your gear, all of it. Don't make poser excuses!" |

People who drive cages don't understand how snap decisions can effect others around them. The fact that I ride two wheels makes me have a heightend sense of situational awareness when I'm driving a cage. To the XB9 rider, you look like your'e gonna heal, but never forget. And that will be your best defence. Anyone in range of you WILL do the stupid thing and then drive away, oblivious to your condition. I don't think your gonna stop riding but your'e gonna have a nice set of riding gear when you do. Keep your head on a swivel! |

I noticed that also jstfrfun... I pay more for bike insurance, but after X years without a claim, they oughta be charging me less for my car insurance. I was driving the family in a minivan on a country highway... we were in a dip and I had slowed down to 40 mph or so by the time we came over the rise, only to find some idiot in a car completely stopped across the road, blocking both lanes. Because I was already down from 60mph to 40mph, cranking it down the rest of the way was reasonably drama free. Someone in the car asked "how did you see that car over the rise"... assuming the reason I slowed down was because I saw the hazzard. But it would have been impossible to see... I hadn't even thought about what I was doing, but realized that I had subconsciously dropped speed to match my sight line on a narrow country highway. I do it without even thinking about it anymore. You should see my head check sequence, in car or bike. |

The Weather is Warming Up It never ceases to amaze me how warm weather seems to make some motorcyclist more immune to road rash! Perhaps the hotter temperatures affect the skin in such a way to toughen its exterior to a leather like consistency. Or, maybe its the warm weather playing havoc with the brains thought patterns. Riding without thought is one of my pet peeves, made more important by the fact that my wife is a registered nurse at the local emergency centre. She gets first hand experience of these dimwits in singlets, shorts, thongs,no gloves but wait....they have a helmet on! Firstly its the crash fix up. Mostly just keeping them alive or giving them morphine because they no longer have any skin left on most of their parts and the bones have started to grind away or their guts has come out of what used to be the skin on their stomach. Then its the months of dressing changes and the wingeing about how it hurts and how they have lost their job and also, and this is the best part, how tired their legs are from standing up because they no longer have any skin on their arse. Mostly because this is the only place left for the surgeon to take it from to fix their face, hands etc. Sadly its these same idiots who through all this are looking forward to their next road rocket because their first one was less than a year old so the insurance paid out in full despite the fact they were squiding around. No wonder we are despised by some when we have people of this calibre amongst our ranks. Makes me want to choke the bastards. |

Gear.... its a personal choice and personally I go for ATGATT but if some choose not to wear it then its their problem if they regret it. Sure they need to be patched up but they should wait until 'Genuine' people needing care have had it. I got no sympathy for self abusers be they smokers with lung disease, fat people with diabetes or skinless freaks who rode a bike with no gear. |

The issue here is that in Australia any wombat who hurts himself gets to go to hospital in an Ambulance for free and will receive the same attention as anybody else to keep their stupid ass alive for free. The taxpayer then foots the bill and because the idjit usually requires surgery, the poor old pensioners who have been waiting for a new whatever to get a new lease on life are then put at the back of the queue because of some mindless twit. Just plain pisses me off!!! |
