Hello all,

The weather has been so nice this winter in NE Ohio that I never really "stored" my 98' S3. Here's my question: The bike has been sitting for about a month without being started. I hit the start button, full-choke applied, and the bike turned over but did not fire. The bike made a noise like the engine was not getting fuel and a light smoke emitted from the carb/intake area. This has happened on starts after I drained the carb and the bike has sat for a month or more.
Is this normal? Is the bike not getting enough fuel? Lean condition which require some modification? The bike fired up on the next start attempt and ran great! Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Probably by-products of incomplete combustion.

I have 2 bikes and a vintage car that are stored and occasionally fired up and ran. To minimize the kinds of drama that you experienced, I make it a little easier to fire up these cold beasts by spraying a little "Easy Startup Spray" into the air cleaner inlet, then fire it up. This does 2 things: 1)it saves wear on the starter and battery, 2) on the car, it gets the engine spinning enough to prime the fuel pump so it'll run on gasoline.

Unless I am wrong, the S3 is fuel injected...
Maybe your battery has decided it was time !!! and it won't have the good charge to operate the fuel injection system correctly: ECM, coils, injectors, and maybe the lights which you may not be able to stop (like here in France) and the fuel pump..

Or it could be worse...you don't ride it enough !!!

Try with the car battery...My guess is that your bike will start easy.....
