While I was waiting for my lightened engine sprocket, lot of engine oil passed over to the crankcase.Normal case,so far.
But today I realized, that the oil, that is still dripping out of my primary case, is no more primary ,but engine oil.It drips out of the crankcase, behind the stator. It was getting more each day.
My conclusion is,that I have to replace the left seal.
This year, while I was riding fast for a longer period on the Autobahn, some (primary)oil was coming out of the tranny vent as well. This was an other sign that made think,I have to replace the seal.
My questions are:
The only seal installer tool I could find, was this one from Jims
http://www.cyborgcycles.com/toollow.html
Is this tool mandatory?
Is the handle mandatory too?Or does it work with a self made handle?
Is this the right tool at all?
As they say, it's designed only for Buells up to 2000.
Mine is 2002.
Is there any other special tool, for those years after 2000?I know that the seal was changed in 2001.
I'm interested in any experiences someone made, changing the seal.
Ralph/Germany

Which $ 27 tool were you talking about?
Jims tool, without handle or driver ,in case it is the right tool I have in mind, is much more expensive. Is the OEM HD tool cheaper?
Do they sell it?
Btw.
What is the best way to remove the old seal?

Do I have to drain the crankcase before installing the new seal? How could I?
Remember,it is full of engine oil.Had not intended to change it,so "luckily" I left it in the bike.Otherwise I wouldn't have seen the leaking seal.

The HD tool is $27 US. Not all dealers will sell you one. I may have the HD part number in the garage, but I'm not sure. You can order the handle too but it costs over $80 US and a piece of metal tubing can be used with the Crank nut to achieve the same purpose.

I used a small sharp hook to pull the old part. I tried to grab the old seal on the shaft side so I did not scratch the aluminium case, as the shaft is much harder.

You do not need to drain all the oil from the case, it will not pour out once the seal is loose. If you wanted to drain all the oil from the cases you could pull the oil line down by the oil pump and blip the starter...don't let her start though...

Patrik.
While the primary is removed, the starter will not turn anything, not even the oil pump.

This is true. I don't really see why this would be necessary anyway unless you had a reason to flush ALL your used oil out.
