For those who have already done a chain drive conversion on their XB9's...Here is a two part question: Part 1 - How many teeth are you running on the front sprocket? And the rear sprocket? The stock belt configuration is 72 rear to 30 front. A 2.4:1 ratio. A 48 tooth rear and 20 tooth front is also 2.4:1. A 55 tooth rear and 23 tooth front is 2.39:1. A 53 tooth rear and 22 tooth front is 2.41:1. So does it matter what size front sprocket is used as long as the ratio is maintained? Part 2 - Let's say the ratio is reduced to 2.2:1. Using a 44 tooth rear and 20 tooth front for example. One would expect the top speed of the XB to increase at the expense of acceleration. How noticeable would the decrease in acceleration be? |

The problem you run into is if the sprocket is on the small side the chain will cut into the swingarm more, and if it is too big it causes clearance issues on cases etc.IIRC I have a 23 on my S-2.On a "9" you will tend to notice the lack of bottom end more than on a "12" so be conservative. |

bingo: FMJ gets a cookie. on the XB, you don't want any thing smaller than 21 tooth front, or you will have the chain cutting into top of swingarm. i am running 21-50 on my 12. my spare sprocket, and the next one going on is a 51 tooth rear. gearing changes (alone) will not make your 9 go any faster. stock gearing is pretty well close to optimum ( for a stock engine)in my opinion. |
