A complex question, hard to answer, many takes on it. An honest dealer would not refuse warranty on wheel bearings because you changed the muffler, but some may try. It's pretty hard putting up with a stock bike for 2 years that YOU own outright, just because you think it's going to need warranty. Will you need engine warranty within 2 years? Does a non-standard muffler cause an oil leak or break belts or clutch cables or warp the rotors? These things need to be thought about. When I fitted a Drummer 2 years ago to the then very new XB12 I took it back into the dealer so he could check the AFV of the ecm and determine that the bike wasn't running lean, he may still have refused engine warranty if I needed it, I'll never know...the small warranties I asked for I got (oil leak, front wheel bearings and idler pulley bearings). Other people fit the muffler themselves and then refit the old one if it has to go in for warranty. It's a difficult question to answer. Fortunately major engine blowups are extremely rare, if ever, so that is a big plus. |

...buy the Drummer, Special Ops, Pro-series, etc and put the stock muffler on a shelf somewhere. Save it for that special day. It may never come. DAve |

How difficult is this system to install Dave. how much of my limited riding time will i use changing it out for the Buell Race can? I really want this system and what the dealer doesnt know wont hurt him and i will put the Stock can on before i send it in for service or repair, maybe just take it to a different dealer for warranty issues if i have any. i'll stop by your web site Kevin and see if i can answer some of these questions myself. thanks for the advice. |

I can't comment on the difficulty of swapping out an XB muffler. The tubers are relatively easy. I recently replaced the D&D on my S2 with a Supertrapp. That took maybe 30 mins. I think the warranty question may be more hype than reality. (Just my .02) Think of all the H-Ds not running "stock" mufflers. It's the first thing to go and seemingly louder is better. What's interesting is the Drummer's numbers seem to be better than the Pro-Series? DAve (And anyone know where the hell Brian aka Bubba is these days? Still with a Thruxton in IN?)

To remove a pipe on a Uly (leave bike on sidestand): Remove chin fairing and sprocket cover, use Torx 27 bit in ratchet screwdriver or 1/4" drive ratchet. Loosen the rear axle pinch bolt, use 3/8" hex key. Undo rear axle 14 to 15 turns, use Buell adaptor in tool kit and 7/8" socket. Loosen idler pulley nuts and washers, 9/16" socket. You may need to slide the idler pulley out sideways for a little clearance, or you can pull it off and be done with it, just juggle it out by hand only, do not force it. Undo muffler clamp where header joins muffler, use 9/16" ring spanner/socket/deep socket. Undo the three muffler mounting straps, use 7/16" deep socket. Remove muffler enough (wiggle the rear end side to side while putting downwards force at the junction to the header) to get access to the actuator cable and release cable from muffler. Ziptie a small plastic bag around both ends of the actuator cable to keep stuff out (i.e. disconnect it from the actuator as well, under the airbox cover). Ziptie the actuator cable underneath the bike to secure it and stop it rubbing on anything under the motor. The SS Drummer will have chin fairing mounts available very soon I'm told. Refitting new muffler: Don't forget to put the muffler clamp on the new pipe before offering it up to the bike. Refit using reverse of above. Torque the idler pulley nuts to 34 ftlb. The muffler mounting straps just do up tight. When winding in the rear axle torque it to 25 ftlb, back off 2 turns, then torque it to 50 ftlb (that's from the XB12S manual, don't know if it applies to the Uly but that's what I did). Torque rear axle pinch bolt 42ftlb. Now you owe me a beer |

So what is the deal from Buell on this? Does it void the warranty? |

Per HD warranty school the only 2 things that you can do to void your warranty are to install a trailer hitch or to convert your bike into a trike. That being said I don't think it's reasonable to cause problems and then expect them to be covered by warranty, stripping out fasteners for example. The warranty department usually recalls parts replaced in a warranty repair and if they are not returned, or if they are returned in a state other than described in the claim, the dealer is penalized. |
