repost to KV: Posted on Tuesday, December 14, 2004 - 06:08 pm: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- the other idler thread got a bit sidetracked, so here is mine: if you ride in the rain a lot, you will likely have the idler pulley bearings fill with water, and then seize (replaced mine twice). the bearings are actually very easy to replace. gently (eye protection) remove the internal snapring, press out (two) 6203 sealed bearings, press in a fresh pair, reinstall snap ring. takes a few minutes. warning USE GOOD QUALITY BEARINGS. good quality bearings have names like KOYO, NSK, NTN, Fafnir, SKB. good quality bearings are NOT made in china, korea, poland, hungary,turkey,nor india. this is not personal prejudice, i install several hundreds of bearings per year in customer's equipment, and when they fail i get the equipment back to fix. i use the best parts available at any price in my business, and i suggest you do the same, when it comes to the sealed cartridge bearings on your bike, get only the best. good luck, dean | ||

Are the idler bearings sealed? I'm guessing no. Maybe they should be. And what are the initial symptoms indicating bearing failure that you noticed? | ||

yes they are a (pair) of sealed bearings. you will notice they feel a little "gravelly" that means they are getting close to failure. mine did not actually seize, but they were pretty rough. for my chain drive idler sprocket, i have upgraded to a much larger 6303 bearing, which is tough as nails.  | ||

does anyone know exactly when they switched from one wide bearing to a pair of narrow ones? For my chain conversion I found a sprocket that accepted the one wide bearing from the idler on my 2003 XB9R. I tried to do the same with my 2005 XB12R and found two bearings where I knew there was only supposed to be one. I ask because the numbers on my wide bearing are not legible. | ||

if you are referring to the STOCK idler wheel, they ALL had a pair of 6203 bearings in them. | ||

I have a 2003 xb9s and am trying to do a DIY Chain conversion. Do you use the stock bracket to the idler for the sprocket? I saw an adjustable tension idler with the $2300 kit, and would love to get that one for adjustability ease. Thanks for any info. I would love to know what part number everything is (sprockets, chain tensioner sprocket) and if I can get them from a local dealer. I'm trying to get this done by Biketober Fest in Daytona, Fl. thanks!! | ||

Hey Dillyo, I think that I have found the perfect chain tensioner for the belt to chain XB conversion. I have been experimenting with several homemade set-ups that worked OK, but, There is a real smart guy here in N.J. who has designed and fabricated an eliptical tensioner that is a srtait-up bolt-on. I'm pretty sure that he sells the whole shebang (sprockets, chain, tensioner, etc.) for like 700 or 800 dollars. Well worth it. It's top notch equipment. My 03 9R has a single 5203 bearing with made in china on it?????? Can I replace it with 2 6203's? | ||

Could not find 2 6203's that would fit. Too big! Replaced with single 5203-2RS | ||

sorry about that china bearing, better get a few spares, they may not last very long. | ||

my 03 has the single, cant replace with double. Got the single bearing @ industrial supply house. $14 Made in Japan. | ||
