Just probing for thoughts on this one. Bike is a well used 2001 X1 with approx 30K on the clock. its been running fine for quite awhile now. Biggest thing to happen in a long time was an exhaust stud backed itself out. Anyways it seems to be down a bit on power (in general) which I was attributing to its age and use. It has a bit of seep from the rear head gasket, nothing major tho. Well today was our first cold day in Rochester NY believe it or not. Temps were in the mid to high 40s when I was riding to/from work. On the way home it felt like somebody had turn the clock to mid 2001 when I first put the pipe and race ECM on it. My usual 20 foot wheelie went to the end of the parking lot and she felt very strong all the way home (17 miles mostly interstate at 80+). Darting in and out of traffic was a huge amount of fun again. Ideas??? Not to look a gift horse in the mouth, but I'd like to have this powerband back 100% of the time. Could this be as simple as the air intake temp sensor? Or maybe the ET sensor. I have the technoresearch software. ECM is showing no codes. Intake seals????? Can't wait for tomorrow, same temps Thanks Matt |

My guess; colder air is denser and contains more oxygen per measure of volume - the motor would therefore make more power. Henrik |

Are you describing a noted or drastic performance change Mark? If 10 was the best it ever ran, what was it lately compared to today? DAve |

Dave, if 10 was the best ever, then this is 10.5 or 11. The bike had more torque than I've felt in a long time. You know the downshift, whack it, and feel like the bikes going to lunge out from under you kind of torque. Henrik/Blake, shouldn't the FI accomodate the temperature change to some degree? The bike has always run better in 40s weather and I understand the whole density vs temp thing. So to maintain this level of performance the solutions are: move up to Newfie land where its always cold or add a turbo for hot weather use (Message edited by mbsween on November 09, 2005) |

Blake - you're funny Matt, either option seems to have it's benefits Wrt. your FI question, I'll let someone more familiar with FI take that one. Henrik |

"On the way home..." At the end of a workday everything runs better on the way home, right? Anyone remember the tech guy in Cycle? Cycle World? in the mid 60's that was building a H-D engined, fuel burning, drag bike? He wrote a series of great articles as he built and rebuilt the engine and he described the days at the strip in detail. Including the frequent post-mortem examinations of the engine. Great writing by a thoroughly addicted biker. Once he described watching a fellow H-D engined drag biker at the strip. The guy unloaded, set up, prepped, fired it up, warmed it and little, and did a couple of short warm up runs in the back of the pit area. Then he came back and loaded bike back onto the trailer, packed up all the tools and stuff, and started to leave. The writer asked him why he was leaving and guy said "the last time it sounded that good and ran that good it blew up on the first run and I just can't afford that right now." You don't suppose.... Jack, in my line of work you never really leave, you just go to places with different phones/comoputers/networks I didn't get a chance to ride today as it was miserable rain and 40s/low 50s I'll have a report tomorrow, supposed to be sunny and low 50s. I'm sure she'll be running fine! |

Mike, That is probably a good job then. It sounds like your the guy that gets the big bucks to fix it when all the local experts/hackers have it thoroughly screwed up. Good luck tomorrow! Jack |
