My existing clutch cable is leaking tranny fluid between the rubber cable housing and the metal flange/screw at the bottom where it attaches to the primary. It is not a big leak, but it is leaking. It is not leaking from where it screws into the primary, but between the rubber cable housing and where it attaches to the metal fitting that then screws into the primary. I have a new cable, the "O" ring and the SM. Being somewhat mechanically challenged could use some help. It appears that i can remove the cable without taking off the Primary cover, is this correct? I assumed the "O" ring went outside where it screws into the primary, but then saw a post that indicated it went inside, which would require removing the primary. Does it goes inside? Should it need replacing since it is not leaking where it screws into the primary? Also, it appears I have to remove the left bolt of the front tie bar to free the cable fastner. Any issues here I need to be aware of? Are there any other issues or tips I need to know about before I attempt this? |

kurt, assuming you are working on the XB9 referenced in your profile. job is very straightforward. oring goes on threaded portion at end of cable. primary cover does NOT need to come off. there is an inspection cover that comes off. i did not remove the front tie bar from my XB(s) dont know about the R model, but it should not be too tricky. that said, i dont think you actually have a cable problem, my question for you is what would be causing pressure to build up in your transmission/primary to pump fluid up and out of the cable. perhaps a pinched or blocked vent hose? or maybe a crank seal damaged or displaced? |

how many miles on the 'bolt? any phantom oil consumption issues? any water or mousse in transmission at last inspection? |

the cable housing is tubular, and not terribly "tight" around the wire cable, there is no internal cable seal, so oil or vapor under pressure can and will travel freely through that cable. that is not a defect in itself, but may be a symptom of another problem. keep us posted. |

Just replaced the primary shoe at the 10,000 mile service last Thursday. To date I have no oil consumption issue Before changing it, I had a bit of mist stain and tranny oil collecting on the metal flange and bolt that connects the Clutch cable to the Primary. No dripping. Nothing big, so I just wipe it clean every once and while and never addressed fixing it After the going into the Primary and replacing the Primary Shoe, then putting everything back together I find a drip stain the size of a nickel on the ground under the clutch cable as it passes by the kick stand. Trace the leak to the joint where the plastic cable sheath connects to the metal flange and bolt the secures it to the primary. I figure I somehow damaged the cable when putting everything back together, or perhaps made my tiny leak bigger. It is leaking while the bike is at rest as the bike is leaned over on it's kick stand. At this position tranny oil would be up to the position where the cable housing screws into the primary. Rode it last Sunday 100 miles and did not notice and significant leaking at the cable or on my boot. But yesterday notice the drip on the floor. I tighten the cable bolt into the primary, but it is still leaking. Nothing real big, but big enough I need to address it. Searching the KV I did find a couple of postings that talk about a leak due to a seal inside the cable at this point failing. Seems the remedy is to replace the Clutch cable. However one person said they used heat-shrinking tubing to resolve this. Seems to me you would have to take the cable off to do that, and might as well replace the cable since I have a spare |

Going to try and figure out where I can get Heat-Shrinking wrap large enough to fit over the metal fitting. Then use that right at the joint between the plastic cable housing and metal flange and bolt that screws into the Primary where it leaks. At least I will have a rigged/patched spare on hand.... The only thing that worries me a little is the seal inside that prevents oil from leaking out the tube is also probably keeping water and moisture from leaking down out of the tube and into the Primary itself. My external patch might keep oil from leaking out, but not other fluids from leaking down and into the Primary. Probably nothing to worry about, but just a thought that crossed my mind PS - I have already zip-tied the ends of the rubber boot that covers the clutch adjustment fitting.. |
