Blake, RacerX, and all you others involved in this "my friends pecker is bigger than your friends pecker" aaahhhh debate:

I have some advice. Pull your zippers down and remove all the short curly hairs, zip up again, then start over.

Point of fact, RacerX never compared his friends work to Nallin's work in the post I read.
He simply call his friends work stage three. What da golf is that?

I can show you three different head porters who define one of their "packages" as stage 3. None of them match the other.

Call the FIM and ask them what a stage three "head job" is?

I don't know, but for $40.00 you can get one at the Mustang Ranch (Fallon, Nevada Brothel) most any night.

I got $100.00 that says neither one of you can knock ants off a powered up electric fence by pissing on them. I wouldn't bet as to weather or not you will try though.

You guys are funny. :)

R,
I simply asked RacerX if he was implying that his $400 stage-3 job was equivalent to the Nallin stage-3 headwork. Later, some of the answers I got were...

1. "...not to knock Nallin but it is all marketing."

2. "it is only 60$ for a set of larger valves and seats (thats cost of course he charges more) then about two hours of porting in each head, not including flow testing."

3. "What Nallin does for a stage three is very simalare almost identical to what my buddy does."

4. "i got the head job done for $60 and two casses of bear picked up close to 20 ponies on the dyno"

5. "a stock head can handle 100+ RWHP so thats nothing special."

6. "Blake i was tryin to be the Better man in this but fuck you."

7. "And as for performance intake. Ha agian you cant pay attention when you have to spit your knowlege, I said jet kit and new air cleaner. Thats all were not talkin 44mm Mikuni Flat slide here."

RacerX,
As to quote number 7 above, isn't "performance intake" synonymous with "new air cleaner"? I'm assuming the "new air cleaner" is a low restriction type such as found on the Force intakes or the Buell race intakes prevalently seen on Buell motorcycles. Wouldn't a 44 Mik F/S would be a "performance carburetor"?

I'm still waiting to see a normally aspirated Buell with stock heads that makes 100+ rwhp. Certainly if it is as you claim "nothing special" for the stock heads to support 100+ rwhp, we should be seeing dyno results showing that. I don't think we will. Can you guess why?

As to trying to be the better man... Are you then now admitting that you are not? :p (I'm joking with you here RX, lighten up.)

Just the facts man. :)

PS: Are you of Italian or Irish ancestry?

Pammy,
We've just got a friendly/spirited debate going on. At least as far as I am concerned.

I like that; simply rate the heads for HP capability. Would you rate the typical bone stock Thunderstorm heads as 100+RWHP capable? :)

Anon R,

1. Please define "short."

2. Please see the RacerX quotes (1.) and (3.) in my post above.

3. What kind of ants? :]

4. They have mustangs in Nevada??!! And they work on cylinder heads??!! Cool! :joker:

Seatonii,
"You can put together a 10.5:1 350 with aftermarket heads that make 540 HP on pump gas with NO port work."
I thought we were talking about porting stock heads?? :? Like say for a Vette? :) Could you not also purchase aftermarket heads for a Buell that would support 1.5 HP/CI with no porting?

I once owned a 1970 Chevelle SS with stock heads. It made around 400 HP. It had a turbocharged 350 CI V8 under the hood. :D

Alrighty then RacerX...I don't know why you feel the need to flip ME off....I was trying to settle things down without smearing any of this shit....and by the way...Mikuni doesn't even make a 44 FLATSLIDE.

Henrik....hmmmm.....I may need a prostitute...Well, I have been working awfully hard,as of late. I think waxing would be a better solution for our British friend.

Nobody here would put in half the hours that Wes does for the amount of money that he gets. The research and development that goes into what he knows is never ending. Sometimes he works days and weeks on one project and then it doesn't work...who pays for that? Wes does, with his Blood, Sweat and Tears. Customers only pay for what DOES work. That's the facts man. We live it every day...no spectulating, no guessing, no relying on what someone else says or you think he means.

How would any of you, who have been doing your 'skilled' jobs for a number of years, like to go into work tommorrow and find that you have been replaced by a new guy who offered to do your job for way less money. Now he doesn't do your job as well as you. The attention to detail isn't there, but he he gets the job done. No big deal huh? But now your boss has a problem, ...something has gone wrong. Who does he turn to? The new guy is not as dedicated as you were(heck he doesn't make any money anyway). I guess your boss learns a harsh lesson in life. Something most of us know well...you get what you pay for.

P.S. Wes does automotive heads for certain customers on a limited basis and he charges WAY more than he does on the bike heads. And he has a waiting list for folks to get in.

Pammy,

Thanks for that perspective, one with which I agree.

I still recall sitting inside your shop/store, eating pizza and talking head porting with Wes. Unfortunately I was quite the ignorant performance engine rookie at the time. Wes handed me a head he had just worked over. I proceeded to study the combustion chamber as we continued our discussion. Then after a while, probably as he recognized my complete ignorance of the subject, Wes picked the head up and turned it over so I could see the ports. I gotta laugh at what I imagine he was thinking at the time.

diggity dang dang ding....wow we are all worked up .....oh shit what was the conversation about...oh yeah it was pee pee size I believe...look pammy is right about the work ethic....and getting the job right ....as far as chasing numbers ...damn I would much rather just ride....in the tight twistys of these mountains in ol N.C....hell you rarely touch all your power....but you do get all your torque and any good engine builder knows you build for torque and the horse power will come....
I could sound selfish and say I don't have to pay a thing for my work but that would be a lie because to do it I would have to take time off from working on everybody elses bike....aahhh hell I'll just give them to Don and let him tweak around for awhile...
now you guys play fair or go out riding ...you'll feel better

Mark,

I'm part...

1. Rudy (sounds German, but kin claim that the Rudies were kicked out of Ireland sometime in the 19th century... probably after being kicked out of Germany :])
2. Smith (English, LOTS of relatives)
3. Mazza (Italiano, ever hear of Mazza wine?)
4. Hibbard (Welsh?)
5. Ladds (English?)
6. Southworth (English?)

I guess I'm a true American, but the Italian and Irish blood definitely comes to the surface in emotional situations.

Blake: Your origin also dictates that you come from a long line of drunkards! The Welsh part leads us to believe that you incessantly spout of incomprehensible jibberish (known as higher math formulae).

Mikej: only the cheap port is red. I believe it is labled MD20/20. Stick to the vintage tawny my friend.

Yawn, back to packing. On my way back home, real soon.

Dang. Wish I would have caught this discussion sooner. My S3 made 100 hp ARW with a cheep porting job. But I spent money on exhust, carb, breather, ignition, headporting. The heads went back together with new valve guide seals, lap valves, and shave 30.000s off. It cost me 350.00. It didn't come close to Brians work. The guy that did them is well known for makin fast cars go faster. He had no experience with the thunder storm head but reconized the quality of head design. I thought I had something pretty good till I met Brian. The pricing Vtwin stated was be for he had all the over head. He was working out of his house. There are alot of good people doing competent work. You just need to know what to ask and why. If they were to leave it up to me as to what I want done as an option, Heck if I know. I have spent a year half really studying the subject and I under stand better what to ask or look for. Any way Nallin Built me a Killer 88" motor. It made 125hp and 109 tq.on pump gas. Good honest people! And not to infer the above mentioned is not.

KC,
Thanks for your fair and balanced commentary. Did you spend any money on cams to get your S3 to 100 rwhp?

Right any way here is some "Bargin Rate" Head work i got from my cousins shop. The head was cracked in a wreck. All the shiny stuff you see is a weld looks brand new only like the paint was removed. The camera I have sucks so pardon the blurr. I told my cousin to put in the valves that Nallin uses (same size and stainless)> He back cut the valves and took off as much material as needed and flowed them. I gained about 18HP with just a jet kit. Stock intake and exhaust. All for 350$ the welding cost me 100$.
head1
Even welded in a new fin
head2
head3
right side
head4
Intake port(would show exhaust but too dark head has allready been ran)
head5
BIG valves ;)

Wow! I was looking for a good point to jump in and throw a few stones but the more I read the more I want to just ship the hulks of the used Thunderstorm heads I just bought off to Nallin for a stage three but that would blow my Penske shock budget all to hell!!

All BS aside, with the winning bid of $137 and the seller honest enough to just charge the actual shipping price of $19, by the time I've got the seats, valves, springs etc into the heads I'll be somewhere near $447.

I learned quite some time ago, that when you buy cheap, you're just pitching that money down the crapper. Much better to combine the money for the 'bargain' job with a few more clams and get the good stuff!

"The bitterness of poor quality lingers on long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten"

(Didn't Ben Franklin say that first?)

Ya, I did. Some other guy had them at $132 before I snapped them up with 15 seconds left in the auction. I figured if shipping would work out to $40, they probably weren't worth much more than $150 to me, considering the work they need, but it ended up at $156 and some change delivered, so I'm pretty happy. This gives me plenty of time to chip away at the rebuild before I'll install them anyway. I have some pistons and a cam I want to install in my FXDL first.

Wow.I skipped reading the archived bits but you guys haven't been playing very nice while I was out of the room! Looks like you've resolved everything now so let me tell you what's got me into this thread:
I know I've run this by you-all before, but this time I'm going to ignore you and do it anyway.
(1.)Common wisdom in the Sportster arena is that an 883 converted to a 1200 with dished Wiseco pistons will pull better than a stock 1200 at all but the top rpms because of the increased velocity (giving better charge mixing) caused by the smaller valves.
(2.)Properly set squish can be done with Thunderstorm heads and pistons (but the 15 degree bevel should be trued(?) at a machine shop, says Aaron.) This squish area also provides better burn. And might allow a bit higher than stock compression ratio.
(3.)Lightning heads, having smaller valves than the T-Storms, should have more mid-range punch. Except for the fact that there is no squish area with the flat-top pistons.
(4.)T-Storm pistons in Lightning heads (with the 15 degree shelf trued as above) would provide the squish area and the smaller valves to make an outrageous midrange (but giving ground above, say 5700rpm) except that the compression ratio would need to be reduced by judicious use of a dremel, a burette, and a six-pack. As long as the valves don't hit.
I have borrowed some pistons to check valve clearance first. Then, I will be casting acrylic plugs, then molds, of both Lightning and T-Storm heads to check for the areas to be relieved. Essentially duplicating the T-Storm combustion chamber. An early Battle 2win shows the two combustion chambers side by side. It looks doable. Porting I did myself years ago to the best of my ability and the limits of my nerve. (How much meat can you take away from that valve guide before it fails?)
Bench-racing potential? Nil. I only go over 5500rpm when I'm too scared to remember to shift while passing. A high, flat torque value? I hope so. Cost: two pistons, which I need to buy anyway for the rebuild (10 thou over).I'll take pics and report on the finished product. Wish me luck!
That Battle 2win article states that the rear combustion chamber is 2 cc.s smaller than the front. Is that standard procedure even at the factory to allow for the uneven firing order? Or just factory variance?

I had a read of the archives. Up to speed now. Stage three means, amongst other things, bigger valves. Not smaller. So I'm on the wrong thread. And when I find the right thread, its the one I started and I had more analysis from Aaron about my plan than I remembered. I'm still proceding with the experiment. I'll post results if there are any on the other thread. (Rebuilding an S1.)
