I hope this is the correct area for this question, I've been searching the archives like mad... I've been trying to diagnose an erratic idle and surging while cruising, I of course attributed this to my TFI unit/tuning all this time but decided to try and turn 'off' the TFI as a test. It is my understanding that setting the pots to 1 -- 1 -- 1 -- 11 will turn the unit off or not allow it to mess with your stock map but everything is still connected. Idle and surge issues were still there. Hmm. So today I decided to unhook the wire going to my negative battery cable because I know i read somewhere that this was a suggestion by Dobeck to help diagnose other issues. Has anyone ever tried this? What ended up happening after I unhooked that wire was the bike would not idle at all. The surging was really bad at idle, down to almost stalling. I could not set the idle properly so I decided to try and let it 'learn' a bit. The bike would continue to have HUGE surges where I would have to continuously give throttle, let off throttle, give throttle, let off, etc. just to keep the bike moving forward. nothing cleared up. Why did this happen? Once I got back to my garage I completely removed the TFI to eliminate it as a possibility all together. The bike is going back to the shop for prob the 5th or 6th time for poor running issues. I had bad ping issues all summer. I don't want the dealer to blame the TFI, this is why I removed it. sorry for the long post, anyone have any clue why the TFI acts so differently when turned 'off' with just the pots set, or turned 'off' by disconnecting the ground wire? I didn't have time to ride the bike with the injectors hooked up in the stock configuration yet. I'll do that tomorrow on the way to the shop. So for tomorrows visit the bike will have no snorkel, K&N, Drummer and Race ECM. Fingers x'd they find something wrong. |

try the original stock ecm, see how that runs.you dont need a dealer to swap that, just a 3/8ths open end wrench, and 5 minutes. |

thnx, Fullpower. that's the next plan of attack, I don't want to give up on the race ECM yet, its brand spankin' new. if the bike is not diagnosed and running better after this visit I'm going to swap the ECMs as a test. praying its a stupid sensor or something. the weather has been gorgeous here, 5min into my rides lately I'm pissed and just want to put the bike away. |

small update from Dobeck. it seems you should be able to disconnect that negative ground lead to diagnose problems. My bike was definitely NOT rideable in that configuration. I wouldn't have been able to get home with those massive surges in power. Dobeck wants me to send the TFI unit back for testing. ...picked up the bike tonight, shop found absolutely nothing wrong with any of the sensors and said it test road fine. i soon as I pull outta the lot... surge, surge, surge. grrr. i wonder if they really testing anything... service sheet said 'running lean due to aftermarket exhaust'. riiiight, they have no dyno or sniffer equip there. must be magic how they know its lean and causing the surging at cruise. didn't test the fuel pressure either like George had recommended. just went and listened to their demo bike and said it was the same. whatever. bike never did it before. i'll be stripping the bike down this winter, might as well take the whole deal into my own hands. TFI is shipped off to Dobeck, I'll report if there was any circuit board oddities. (Message edited by typeone on October 07, 2005) |

Hey T1 what do your spark plug's look like color reading. It may be lean or too much timing surge air leak's ? Does it idle smooth..? (OK) J.B. |

I could never convince myself that turning all the pots down on the TFI completely eliminated its effect on the system. I could very well be wrong but I've worked with so many industrial electronic devices over the years that turning the pots to 0 wasn't really off. When I did my TFI testing on my 9 I unplugged the injector lines (pain in the that it is) to insure that my test was rigorous. |

Jonsbuell, I've had 4 sets of different plugs in the bike, readings had been all over the map. haven't had time to pull the current set to inspect but intend to and will report. Idle smooth? not like it used to, the needle would bump very slightly at 1050 but now it seems to surge in a range of about 500RPM. i can't get it to idle like it used to anymore. i've checked for air leaks twice, once with contact cleaner and once with WD-40. SOAKED it, no change in idle. grrrr. Jerseyguy, I'm with you on that statement. I felt with the TFI still in the loop something was being altered. I sent my unit back to Dobeck and they sent me a brand new unit. No details on what they found, just shipped a new one no questions asked. I haven't had time to install it yet to see if there will be a change. Wondering if I should even bother with winter here and new tuning software on the horizon. I'd LOVE to just be able to tweak the map in the race ECM. (obviously) unfortunately with all the rain, cold weather and work load my experiments were put on hold. bike ran pretty well on the highway last weekend, nice cold air gettin' sucked in (she likes the cold air) but still was doin' the herky-jerky under 3500RPM in town. Just before I removed the TFI I had the bike (05 12S) on a dyno and the numbers were waaay down, barely making 80hp and 69tq, a/f plot showed she was very rich everywhere. i was running Kevin's recommended settings (4-8-6-8:15) with pot 2 up a tad in an attempt to combat ping. i'm hoping to get on a dyno before winter arrives with only the race ecm and no TFI. curious to see what differences I'd get. i need to go back to that shop to get all my graphs printed. adjusting the TFI on a dyno isn't so easy with a tech that just wants you on your way (Message edited by typeone on October 22, 2005) |

Hey, I've got a question. I always get this mixed up, rich means too much gas in the mix right??? Typeone, if you're running rich and the recommended settings are 3 7 4 7 and you're running all of them higher should'nt you be getting too much gas??? Except for the last pot which you have go higher to fight the high rpm surging... Not trying to flame anyone, just trying to keep this straight... Mine runs good except for the higher rpm surging when trying to keep it at a steady rpm, 4700 or so... Kevin |
