I picked up a new Buell "Race" filter from my dealer and noticed that the media wasn't red like all my other K&Ns. It looks just like your typical K&N with the cloth media and a screen around the outside, but it's white. Anybody know why? |

I bought the same filter, I read somewhere that you do not use filter oil on this version yet it is still washable. It would be nice to have a definitive answer. |

And I just found out today that those new filters are going bye bye as well.HD and Buell are bring or have brought a new vendor for filters aboard again.Found this out today on the account that I'm was waiting on the filter from my dealer and its back ordered without a release date.Wound up getting the K&N original race filter through Drag Specialties through the dealer. They are now handling the filters for are XB's. |

Dana, Thanks for the inside info. Have you got a part number on the K&N? Come to think of it I think I saw one on eBay. |

Jerseyguy - Check out the K&N site to confirm, but I believe the number is BU-9003. I just bought one and that number is sticking in my head. Can anyone confirm. I don't have time to check the site. Hi-ho, hi-ho, it's off to work I go... |

I do not know. It's not needed so I wouldn't mess with it. That's the one thing I do not like about the K+N. |

hi,the k&n needs the oil to stop the fine grit and sand, you can get a spray to spray on, then wash with water. when dry another spray of oil that goes sticky when dry ,bingo for another few thou, i clean mine every 1500 miles . i use pj 1.if its good for moto x , got to be good for a road bike in a sandy area or dusty. |

I do not like the "new" Buell Race air filter. I bet it flows just fine when it is new. I bet that it will never get clean after it has been used. There are two different methods of filtration used on bikes: Labyrinth and Sticky oil types. Several different media is used, but the the principles are the same. Paper filters like the stock filter are labyrinth filters. They work because air snakes thru the media and gets caught on the rough edges in the passageways. Eventually the passageways get clogged, and the filter doesn't breath. You throw it away, and put in a new one. Sticky oil filter use either a somewhat porous gauze or a foam element to carry a sticky oil substance. Dirt adheres to the oil. Eventually, all the oil is dirty and you must detergent rinse it clean to remove the oil and dirt, then re-oil it. The maker of the new Buell filter seems to believe that you can clean a labyrinth type filter with detergent. I don't believe that. You can't get the dirt to go backwards thru the labyrinth, even by spraying it with detergent, unless you drive it out with enough force that destroys the capture properties of the labyrinth. I heard the similar screaming eagle sporty filters were recalled or some such thing. It's hearsay, I don't know for sure. I returned all of the new Buell ones with the white element when I got them and bought K&N's. The K&N price went down anyway. I think some one at Harley blew this one and got duped by the filter maker. I don't know for sure, I'm guessing. But I wouldn't run one of those new ones personally. I'd run and replace stock filters before putting in one of those new race filters and cleaning it. Al |

Al what you heard about the Screaming Eagle filters being recalled,I heard the same just the other day.Something about them pulling apart.I didn't accept the new filter even though its not there yet.I had them cancel that and get me the K&N.I have one in my 12,I want the same in the 9. |

I agree Al. I have always upgraded to K&N in every bike I could, especially offroad. Well I'm glad my 9R has the "older" race kit with the K&N |

When I orderd the race filter a while back I thought I was going to be getting a K&N unfortunatly it was when they just changed vendors and got this new white one. I think once it gets dirty I am just going to get a K&N. |

The race filter on my XB has blue rubber and white, non-oiled filter media. Is this the new one? Thanks, Warren |

Good, grief! Sometimes my lack of good sense is phenomenal. Someday I'll learn to read the whole thread! I guess I better get a K&N! Sorry about that! WT (Message edited by WhiskeyTango on September 16, 2005) |

I'm fairly sure that the people at Buell know a thing or two about air filters. Pretty sure that few of us know as much as they do about it. K+N makes a good filter, no doubt. I have used them for years too. To automatically think the new filter is inferior just because it is different is a little strange coming from Buellers. Maybe Buell should just start making inline 4,chain drive, full faired, conventional gas tank/oil tank bikes too as to not upset the status quo? I think not. The bright side is it gives everyone something else to debate! Just think of the dyno claims we could come up with! I can get either one the customer wants and save you 10%! I really don't think there is a "wrong" choice, just a choice. Maybe I'll put one of the new ones in my demo and see how it does. I have the K+N in it now, that's what was in the race kit when I had it installed. |

I love the Badweb! Where else can you get the inside information like this .... Daves - I'm sorry bro, I bought a K&N off of eBay. I didn't know you could get them. I have put K&Ns on my Porsches, Jeeps and on most of the other vehicles I've owned. Do they make a difference? Honestly, I don't know. Seems like a good idea and it doesn't cost too much so why not. |

If no one ever uses the KV, threads there will not get the response they deserve. It is up to us to start using the KV so that folks will start checking it. I also believe that it is a bit of a stretch to clain that "had I put it in the KV, I'd have never gotten a response......." Plenty of traffic there lately. I'd sure appreciate your cooperation in the future. |

I think that at one time the S/E and Buell Race filters were made by K&N. The new S/E or Buell white DO NOT OIL filters seem to develop holes on them when oil from the breather gets sprayed, or vapored on. I have had a brand new ones on a HD go south because of the breather vent during a dyno tune. The Motor Company has stood behind all of them replacing many even though they were beyond the new part warranty... Terry |

Just a quick note , I do not know if it applies to these filters but here is goes. I was watching a car show, and they were going over airfilters and the types of elements. The K+N filters use cotton, which needs to be oiled to work, however the new filters uses a synthetic fiber that does not require to be oiled, and you can still wash them. I think that is what the new buell performace filters are. However I stuck with the K+N (Message edited by windaddiction on February 27, 2006) |
