OK - first annoyed, now I'm just depressed... I've got this new '05 XB9SX that I can't ride for more than a week with out it blowing fuses (headlight, instruments), shutting off, stalling, or something F*CK The shop already replaced the fuse box harness, and wires going to the headlight and instrument panel. When I called them back, the guy just sighed heavily saying "well, guess I'll call Buell again... not sure what to do." Its seriously been in the shop longer than in my possession. I've never heard of a new bike that I've had to get "tuned up" twice (under 2000 miles) for it to run half-way decent. Ridiculous.... I can't help but start to regret this purchase. You buy these things to ride, for transportation, not *just* to tinker with. - thanks for letting me rant (again) |

My '03 XB9S's wiring harness running next to the battery and worn through and was causing my fuse to blow. When I dropped it off they called me back later and said runs fine we can't find the problem. I am like "Hey the fuse keeps blowing and killing the bike keep looking." They kept looking and found the chaffed wire on the harness. |

My rear shock reservoir rubbed through the wires there too. luckily I saw it when i installed the race ECM in the dealer parking lot. when i pulled out the wires going to ECM it was plain as day. shiny, exposed wires : ( I guess this winter i'm going to have to strip the bike down to look for more chaffed wires. lame. |

It's probably all rooted in the same problem, a short somewhere. Nothing to do but hunt it down and kill it, and if it is intermittant, that can be a royal pain. I feel bad for you (for not having a bike to ride) and for the tech (which is going to have a very difficult and thankless job). If that ECM harness is routed wrong (easy to do) it will make a very small nick in the wiring harness, as both Krassh and myself discovered. But there are plenty of other places wires can short also. Any other hints before the fuse blows? Just bad running? Odd speedo behavior? |

Thanks for the input folks! The headlight fuse is what keeps blowing. And there really aren't any other clues... the bike runs top-notch since my last service. Here's the behavior though: 1. I put in a new fuse 2. Turn the bike on... within 5-10 minutes the fuse will blow. After my last service, they dismantled the bike, reset the fuse box harness, and followed the wires all the way back up to the headlight. Found nothing, put it back together, and then... it seemed fine. I drove it every day for 2 weeks, then just yesterday, it acted funny: 1. I turned it on, didn't get the fuel pump noise like usual, bike wouldn't start. 2. I turned it off, then back on, bike made noise and started, but sure enough... the headlight fuse blew again... Weird. Either way, the shop is picking it up to work on it again. The mechanic is cool... I feel his pain and I appreciate your comments. I've been passing on the hints. And don't get me wrong, this is just unfortunate and a pain. I more just ercked by the fact that I haven't gotten to ride it much. Thanks all! |

Have you changed the headlight bulbs? The wrong wattage bulb might cause that as well. |

...and wrong fuse value. Sounds like a pinched or shorted wire to gnd... And checking the wires and switches in the left switch housing is a great idea. Has anyone disconnected the headlight and turned the bike on? Has anyone tried changing the hi/low beam switch and turned the bike on? They probably have but just tryin' to think of somethin' to test... |
