Has anyone had any experience with this filter from American Sport Bike? Good or Bad. Some say 35 microns is not enough filtering. True or false? Sure would like to reuse rather than toss away. |

Madsx: IF YOU HAVE TOO FINE MICRON FILTER IT WILL CAUSE YOUR "OIL LIGHT" TO COME ON !!! Harley-Davidson had one and when put on a SPORTSTER engine the OIL LIGHT would come on, THERE WAS A "SERVICE BULLETIN" on this ... If you realy want to filter your oil, put a "RETURN OIL LINE" filter in the mix ... Want a picture, E-MAIL me so "i" can get your e-mail address and "i" will ??? Well, if I remember correctly the 35 microns is an ABSOLUTE filtration level...the paper filters average out to be less, but that means that some bigger particles may get through. If the reusable filter is cleaned properly, I'm sure it will provide as good or better filtration than the paper filters. I would get a reusable one if they weren't so expensive. |

Crusin: Lets not forget that that H-D engines are roller bearing engines ... "AND" the SPORTSTER/BLAST/XB engines have two stage oil pumps .... MEANING that you get the most metal in the return line to the oil tank (frame BLAST/XB), then this same metal goes thru the feed side of the oil pump to the oil filter ... Now if you want to cut down your oil pump wear and drag by 50% you install a return oil line oil filter(AND AUTOMOTIVE FILTERS WORK JUST FINE) ... I am a retired engineer from a major airline and now build Buell Race Bikes and run Performance Services at H-D Buell of Vallejo. I use the Scotts pump on our race bike as well as my S3-T In my other life I was responsible for the oil system on several different turbine engine fleets, as well as coordinating the oil program for the entire airline. But on the subject of the "Scotts" filter, it is an aircraft type of cleanable filter. You don't use it to save money you use it to inspect the fine bits of metal that the engine produces during operation. A 35 Micron filter is in the range of the best quality disposable filters and allows you to get a heads up if anything other than a fine fuzz comes up on the built in magnet. To use it correctly you need a coffee filter to clean it into and then wash the coffee filter and inspect your findings. Hope this has helped... Terry |

some problems are meant to be disposed of. when it comes to oil contaminants,metallic wear particles, grit, sludge and debris, throwing away a 5 dollar can-full at each oil change sounds like a bargain to me. dean |

I have one. I like it. It's nice to see what's in there. After rebuilding my motor and doing an oil change soon after I even found some teflon pipe tape pieces in there. How cool is that? |
