I have photos of a black RR1200 with gold lettering that was in Daytona in 96 or 97 at the Buell show at the Civic Center. It had been owned by a Gal in New England who sold it to someone around Wisconsin (might of been a HD employee). She said it was a 92 which the factory said couldn't be correct but I figure that was the year the Dealer sold it... |

That picture appeared in a British bike mag years ago. I can't remember if I have the magazine or not. If I do it might take some finding but anyway, wasn't Father Gess the snapper ? Rocket in England |

Daqve didn't shoot that one. I think I have picture from when it came out. Brit mags were the first to do "blue" Buell ads with the nekked red S-1. The other "notable" was the poster of the S-2, mostly nekkid shemale and the Checy pickup. That's your history lesson for the day |

The poster is buried with the "Buell posters that never made it", I'll find it and shoot a pic. Don't get me started on Old Buell Pictures.....

I need advice, I recently purchased a 1993 RS1200 and I can't seem to get any specific information on this bike. Was there ever a shop manual printed on this. I called Buell's customer service line and they gave me a name and number to call but the person that answered the phone never heard of that person. The bike has less than 2000 miles on it and is completely as it left the factory in 1993, it even has the original tires. I have put 200 miles on it since getting it, the bike is extremely comfortable and I would like to do a little long distance riding on it(after I get a fresh set of tires of course). My questions are: 1. Can I get a shop manual for this bike and if so where? 2. It has the White Power shock, is it safe? How do I adjust it and what does what? 3. The chain drive makes alot of noise especially when going over bumps, what should the freeplay be? 4. Is there anything prone to failure on this series of bikes that I should be aware of? Any help would be great as my local dealership parts department told me my bike shouldn't be ridden it should be in a museum somewhere. I bought this motorcycle to ride though and so far I am really impressed. |

Dann, congrats that is one great bike. Call Buell Motorcycles in East Troy WI (directory assitance should have the number) and ask for Tom Anglim. He can get you a service manual. It has no pictures, I never had enough time to do them. Tom can also get many parts that you will need as well as a parts manual. When you look at the parts manual any item with a part id beginning with a number is an HD part and you can get them from an HD dealer. By all means ride the thing. The WP shock is perfectly safe. The owners mannual should have the adjustment info. Again Tom should be able to get you one. If not I have a source. Areas prone to failure? Watch the bottom of the gas tank were it sits on the frame. I bet that the sponge thingies that padded the frame are flat and the tank is rubbing on the frame tubes. They can wear through. Another area is the fuel valve. It is a solenoid and a good number of them fail. It can take a while to get a spare so you mgiht want to keep an extra one around. Aaron Wilson and Court Canfield will chime in here with more details I am sure. Enjoy Dave |

Dann: I am lusting as I look at that beauty. I have logged mucho miles on them, from the days when there were like 6 of them. There are plenty of parts available as long as you want the right stuff. There is an owners manual and a service manual. Tommy can get you fixed up and if you have any problem connecting with him let me know, I have a case of spares somewhere. Ditto Dave on the shock....never had any sort of a problem. Get a nice fluffy towel and wrap whetever you carry in the underseat storage in the towel. Other than that....ride it and enjoy it, it's a fabulous motorcycle. Court |

Thanks Dave and Court, I really like this bike alot, I want to keep it 100% as Erik built it so far it has been alot of fun. I will try to get ahold of Tom on Monday. As far as the chain goes it really concerns me, is there a spec on free play and do you measure it with a rider on the bike? |

According to the latest issue of B2W ,in the opinion of the writer, the most collectible of all Buells is the 1996 S1. Interesting thought... |

That whole article was odd. White Lightnings seem far more desirable. The article also incorrectly stated that only the '97 had a carbon fiber rear fender. I think that was the only year that Buell produced the CF fender in-house and painted it black. Not sure why that would make it more desirable. Weirdest of all was the comment that the Thunderbolt wasn't worth much. I would think an S2 is as special and collectable as the S1. Oh well, what do I know... |

Ok, I meant the '96 S1... That was the only year that Buell produced the CF rear fender and painted it. After that it was an vendor supplied piece and left bare. Am I right yet??? |

I believe I saw reference to the in house CF person / people not being too well versed in hand laid CF and it was aesthetically displeasing. -Saro |

>>>>>I believe I saw reference to the in house CF person / people not being too well versed in hand laid CF and it was aesthetically displeasing. Hehehehehe....that is, damnit, an accurate statement. Poor guys really did a good job on the S-2 stuff. Had to learn some tricks to allow production to move to like 6 bikes a day. But, alas, with the numbers of the S-1's (like 9 bikes a day) trying to get the CF so it was what customers expected (no pits, fiber flaws or whatever) it was just easier to shoot the damn thing with Vynilon (same stuff in the fairing of the S-2) |

I still have the original black rear fender from my '96. Boy, ist it heavy! The later "pitful" unfinished units ('97 & '98) were quite a bit lighter. |

Ah, dang it, Saro! I had the answer, but you hit the buzzer first! Drat, now I missed out on the bonus round... For a number of years my wife worked at Glendale HD/Buell. In '96 I ordered a CF S2 air cleaner cover for my Sportster. Somebody (I have no idea who it was) from Buell was at the dealership and I asked them why they were painting the S1's rear fender since it was CF. He mentioned that Buell was throwing away nearly as many CF parts as they were producing 'cause it was so hard to make them look good. He wouldn't tell me where the trash bin was... That CF cover was one of the biggest conversation pieces on my Sportster... |

Wow what a beautiful machine. Screw the museum stuff and ride it. I've put nearly a thousand miles on my new-to-me S2 in about a week and a half. Took it on vacation over the long weekend, got it really dirty, but hey it washes off. I love this bike, and I'd hate, after riding it, to deprive myself of the "grin-factor" it gives me. Besides, if I kept it in a museum, I wouldn't get to hear all the great comments from people when it's parked somewhere, or when other riders pull up next to me at traffic lights |
