I recently installed the HSR42 on my M2. I had to switch over the stock Harley enrichener cable per the installation instructions. Just the last week or so the bike will quit when idling while cold-the enrichener pulls itself back in. I've got the plastic thumbscrew as tight as I dare go. I think it's just worn out. Anyone have any experience with the Mikuni cable? Is it any better (as in, does it have detents, etc) or should I just replace the thumbscrew? | ||

Mine does the same thing and I have a new cable from H-D, but I usually am sitting on it while it warms up cause I don't want it to end up in the middle of the road! So I just hold it out, could try a smaller spring from a hardware store.... Never tried the Mik cable looks to be better made but it doesn't say choke on it, which appeals to my sick sense of humor. | ||

i had the same problem which was fixed by tightning the plastic ring with a vice-grip! | ||

I was checking out the HSR42 Mikuni on my FXR to try to check out the aforementioned plastic thumbscrew. I vaguely remember it but I can't see it because too many things are in the way. As a retired tool & die maker I tend to sneer at plastic parts where metal will do much better. If you could get a machinist to fabricate you a brass or aluminum thumbscrew is it then possible to get it on the choke assembly? KK | ||

I've got Mikunis on the S1 and the Road Sofa, and my standard starting drill is to bump up the idle by a couple of turns on the thumbscrew, then pull the choke, hit the starter and let the choke go back in on its own after a few seconds. Trust me on this: it is easy to break the plastic part by overtightening. I fixed mine with JB Weld. rt | ||

On further investigation... I found that tightening the MOUNTING nut (11/16, with star washer) actually tightens up the whole assembly making the plastic nut quite effective again;problem solved!  | ||

careful with that, as Road Thing stated you may end up using JB weld to fix, I tried an epoxy, very easy to break/hamfist. Glad yours turned out OK | ||

The Mikuni enrichener does have a ball detent instead of the friction junk. It's about twice the price, and will still wear out eventually. You only need the enrichener for start up, anyway. |
