I'm using the "Back-off" Light that modulates the brake light. It blinks 3 times and then goes steady for 3 secs...then starts again. No other LED's on my S3.

Director Steven Spielberg hurt in scooter accident

Published 12:40 p.m. PST Friday, Dec. 7, 2001
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Director Steven Spielberg is recovering from minor injuries sustained in a scooter accident last week, his spokesman said Friday.
The 54-year-old filmmaker, whose famous image from "E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial" involved a bicycle flying from a cliff, toppled off the scooter near his home in the Hamptons in New York several days after Thanksgiving.

He twisted his knee, but did not suffer any broken bones or head injuries, spokesman Marvin Levy said.

Spielberg has a brace on his knee, but is otherwise in good health and no surgery is believed necessary to repair the joint, Levy added.

The director is currently in postproduction on his Tom Cruise sci-fi adventure "Minority Report" and preproduction on the con-artist drama "Catch Me If You Can."

The injury is not expected to interfere with his work, Levy said.

Would it be cool if we could get him on a Buell. Inspire him to do an American sport bike themed movie.

It almost happened.

I was on my way to the HD dealer too!

It was just warm enough for an afternoon ride. I was tooling up a four-lane main road in Columbus, Georgia.

Traffic started to slow down and I heard the screeching tires of a car behind me.

Without even thinking, I twisted that throttle as quick as I could and split the lane in front of me. I looked in the rear view mirror and saw a car skidding out of control trying to avoid the stopped cars in front of it.

No accident happened, but it was in my spot!

Thank God for low rpm torque (and CV carbs). I was in 3rd gear and chugging along when I had to punch it.

I didn't have enough time to even be scared. I'm pretty sure the car would have rear ended me if I hadn't gotten the Hell out of the way.

Sonofabitch...

I'm with Oldman, I seldom have to stop at a red light. The ones that get me are the sensor activated ones when I'm first in line.

I am livid. A family member knocked my S1 off its stand this morning. Mirror, handlebar, shift lever, and front fender (the removed front wheel was left between the fork legs). Unbelievable.

Rick,

My wife backed over my S3 with the minivan, though not all the way over. Once the van's bumper removed the front fender and hit the forks, the now well curved sidestand began to slide instead of bend.

She got off easy. I replaced the sidestand and put on the CF fender that I had purchased 8 hours previous on a whim for $25 (God likes me/her, don't know which) until I can get the painted fender ordered. Forks, etc are fine. All told it will cost less that my deductable.

Never raised my voice. She was shaking when she came in to tell me, so I knew there was nothing to be gained there. I did vent a bit at Buell engineers while trying to get the damn split ring and spring off and back on in such tight quarters though.

Rick: You can always get another bike. Family are impossible to replace. I'm sure the guilty son/daughter/wife feels terrible about it. Give 'em a hug and tell 'em it's agood thing their are too old for a good spankin'. :)

Rick-

I'm with Blake. Seperate your ill feelings about the bike from the unintentional (I assume) events that brought on the misfortune. Easier said than done...

Good luck getting it up and running again...

Well, I woulda stayed calm if the offender didn't insist that it fell on it's own...and she'll take it to the grave, too. The fact that I had just finished getting her up and running a mere few hours earlier didn't make me feel any better, either. As it was I hollered enough to go hoarse. Anyway, I always thought an S2/S3 front fender would look better, and a CF version from ASB is on it's way. The shift lever somehow straightened out without creasing, so that was salvaged. The mirror I'm going to repair, and the small scratches I can live with. Ah well.

Thanks for the input.

Several years ago a buddy & I went out for a bicycle ride. He'd just gotten a new $1,500 steed and wanted to try it out. When he got home he leaned it against the back of their minivan and went inside.
His wife ran out to do an errand....well you know the rest of the story. He was mad at her, I took her side, never leave something behind that can't be seen.

I just got my M2 back from the shop last week. A little old lady was pulling a U-turn but swung a bit wide. Her bumper nudged the front tire just hard enough to push it over onto the right side. I was standing 3 feet away and could do nothing.

It was mostly little stuff that needed replacing: Right side mirror, brake handle and pedal, rubber bar-end cap, rear turn signal. There was a dime sized gouge in the tail section so that got replaced too. The only reason I had the shop do the work is that the air box took the brunt of the landing and was completely shattered, so I wanted to be sure there was no damage to the carb.

All told, her insurance company had to fork over $1k.

While it was in the shop I had the muffler mount replaced for free (Thanks Jose for your timely mention of the extension! )

One curious thing about the tail section... it was cracked under the seat, obviously before the fall. The only thing I can figure is the weight of the rear assembly bouncing around caused a stress failure. Kinda made me glad the lady had to buy me a new one! First chance I got I modified the rear so it's lighter.

Blake - Well, maybe not "obviously", but they are not located where I would expect cracks from landing on the side.

There are 4 bolts under the seat which also hold the luggage straps. The 2 bolts at the rear are in a raised part of the plastic which runs all of the way across the tail piece. Imagine lifting from the rear of the tail, high/hard enough to break all of the way through that raised section and into the rectangular holes that allow the seat to reat on the frame. These breaks are both at the extreme sides where it transitions from horizontal to vertical.

Hope that made sense! Maybe I'll play with posting pics using my daughters Barbie camera.

Man these bikes are TOUGH!!
While test riding my 2000 S3 after I installed the Jaz catch can and rerouted the breathers and some other little stuff, I low sided her into a right hand corner. Off came the hypercharger air box, mirror, both turn signals and the brake pedal as well as the front fender when it hit a rock while sliding off the shoulder.
The IAT sensor was broken too, but she started right up and got me home.
Today, I washed the dust off of everything, took a good look and am suprised at how well these bikes hold up.
A little touch up paint, a few new parts ala ASB and I am back in business.
The bike was running great and I was feeling bullet-proof, thank God for leather and helmets.
Humility sometimes hurts...

Found out you can't do 2 burnouts in a row with sticky tires. Did the first one was way cool but the girl i was showing off for walked back in the bar before i got to it. She came back out wanting to see it again so i clicked into second gear pulled in the clutch hit 4500 rpms and brought the rear tire 3 foot off the ground catching my ankles with the rear pegs lifting me off my feet got loose broke the front peg and brake lever off trying to put the front tire down. Didn't relize was not going to help the rear tire was in the air. Short of that a few small scratches on the bike a scab on my knee and the imbarassment i lived and learned.

Sybren: It was only after the development of the movie film when it was discovered that galopping horses were already landing with the first front leg before the last leg was in the air. Something like that.
Sandman, if you could learn to do that a few times in succession, that would be great.
Hans.

I thought they showed that a race horse actually had all four off the ground at the same time. A long time since I have seen that kind of footage.

Loki, you are right: All horse legs for a short moment in the air.

I think that is possible that it is done by Sandman with his wheels.

The frontwheel was thrown in the air and forward when the wheel left the ground. The center of gravity was still rising and the bike came in a forward motion when the brake was hit and jerked the rearwheel (relatively) backwards. This centralised mass bike would be easy to get in a pitching position by a small turning momentum. The centre of gravity was still rising when that pitch was wildly setting in. The rear went up with the frontwheel still in the air. The bike landed then shortly after on his frontwheel with the rearwheel still in the air.
Sandman: I believe you did it.
Hans.

It almost happened to me.

I was moving along heading out of town, doing about 30 (in a 25- sue me) when a car pulled out in front of me. I was crossing an T-intersection near a school, well before school let out for the day, where the inter section had to outgoing lanes from the right hand side- a left and a right turn lane. The car in the left hand lane sees me and stops, but the car behind him got aggravated that he stopped, and slid thru the right turn lane to make a LEFT HAND TURN!!!

Arrgghhh.

I was about 100 feet out. I couldn't go right- the car that stopped for me was there. I couldn't go straight for obvious reasons. The only reason I'm here writing this is because the oncoming Grand Cherokee saw it happening. She slammed on her brakes a block up the street, even though it took me a quarter of a second to realize it. I leaned hard left, intending to ditch it into the moron. I didn't want to lay it down without it hitting the f**ker, just so he could drive away scott free.

Fortunatly, my tires are still in good shape, and somehow I was able to keep it up and swerve into the oncoming lane. By now, I had realized the nice lady in the Jeep had hit her brakes, and I had room to keep it up, and barely righted myself before I highsided on the embankment on the far side of the street. I managed to get to a stop (in the raingutter) before bumping the Jeep, but I could hear the a$$hole punching it to get away from there, lest I actually go down. Basturd.

I wish I could attribute me being an awesome rider for not laying in an emergency room, but I can't. It was sheer luck. And I never realized how fast things happen, or more amazing to me, quite how fast you can think things through as they're happening. I can remember going through exactly what happened as it happened. Strangely though, I can't remember some things I thought I would.

For example: I can't remember what the moron was driving. I couldn't tell you what the car was, the color, or even if it was a car, truck or SUV. No clue. Also, I burned out my clutch in the process. I think I tried to downshift and dropped the clutch, but I have no memories of it.

The whole experience makes me want a whole bike camera system.

PS. Blake I love the new interface. It rocks.

Well i guess i should explain a little better. Im not exactly sure of everything i was slightly pie-eyedWhat happened was the bike was flipping but i got in the way and wouldn't let go cause i wasn't letting it roll into traffic. You would be surprised what you can do when you have $11,000 dollars in your hands and your waiting for the back of your head to smack the pavementPlus i would rather not try that trick again even if i could Still it was kinda fun maybe
