There is (although I stand corrected if this has changed) no way to tell when you motor was built. It's one of the oddest, and for a while most carefuly kept quiet, secrets of Buell production but the serial number USED TO be put on the engine as the Buell was being shipped. The story behind this is kinda cute and, stripped of corporate double speak, basically says "hey, it's a pain in the a** to try to keep a SPECIFIC engine and a SPECIFIC frame headed toward each other in the production process. The easiest (and I concur BEST) way to do this was to have the Frame VIN planted at an early production station, prior to front fork install. Then, after all is said and done, including roll testing, Mr. Nate looks at the paperwork, confirms the V.I.N. and loads dies in a nifty little Brekin designed holder. He first takes it, places it on all the "build sheet" paperwork and whacks it, thus leaving a permanent record of what was ACTUALLY loaded in the dies and put on the bike. Ditto one other piece of paperwork. Finally, KAWHACK, Nate imprints the number on the engine cases. And know you know......the rest of the story. Court (this has likely been changed by now and dif you want an even better story ask me about the dweebs who broke into the plant one night) |
