Thanks, guys... I'm about 99% sure I'm gonna buy it. But i doubt I'll sell the Bandit! I like my toys!!! And I prefer to have a fully stocked arsenal... You know,,, The right tool/toy for the job. Both bikes seem to get dissed by those that don't understand 'em (or are intimidated by 'em), so that tends to make me want one of each. My fortyish body (especially my wrists)is beat up enough that the Bandit is my perfect choise for a long haul platform, but I still like to play,,, Therefore the Buell. It's a deal I really can't pass on (and the ex has no say in the matter :)). Besides The think the S1 will be a real hoot on track days.

I wouldn't buy a salvage S1 for $3900 unless it was already fixed. My S1 is for sale for $5000 and I've seen a few go on Ebay for $4500. If there is much work to do, it's just not worth it right now.

Jason, I've seen several Buell motors sell and the price point is $2500.

Thanks Ralph... It's been completely restored to it's previous condition... The guy that originally owned it (when the ins. co. wrote it off) bought it back and rebuilt it... My buddy (current owner) bought it off him and did even more work on it and now that he bought an '84 H-D wants the cash to work on the Harley... He's the kind of guy that will buy a car/truck/bike work on it, get bored and sell it to buy/built his next project. Besides his wife wouldn't ride on his (prior project) Bandit or the Buell. She just likes Harleys... His loss is my gain :) !

As long as it's quality work, sounds good. Just remember that salvage title drops the resale for you later. At that price, shouldn't matter. So hey, post some pictures when ya get it!

Im looking to buy a 95 s2.
It has had big heads, cam, carb built, and alot of other performance mods done to it. It has 4300 miles on the bike and 100 miles since upper and lower engine rebuild on it.
I have looked around for a buell for about 8 months and i really like this one, so much that im having it shipped to pittsburgh from florida.
What my question is: is there anything about the 95 s2's that i need to know? I know parts are gonna be harder to find but is the 95 a good model year? I like the fact that its hand built... ive done alot of looking around and searched info. Is there anything about the 95 that should keep me from getting it? i can work on most of it as i have has a sportster for a long time and im familiar with the motor...
any input is appreciated!

Well thanks for the advise guys... I picked the S1 up today... I couldn't wait! What a hoot :) ! I still love riding my Bandit, but the S1 is SOOOO different! It has a Forcewinder intake with a Racewinder Carbon airbox along with a few other carbon fiber bits. I'm amazed at the flyscreen and how well it deflects the air flow. I can't wait for some warmer weather... I'm still trying to thaw out from my short ride today! Thanks for the input and advice.

Need some help from those in the know about the M2Low!

My wife rides a '98 Sportster Sport - but only because until now there was no Buell to fit. What we need to know is... does the M2L have enough ground clearance to be a worthwhile ride or is too much sacrificed in making it lower?

She is way too short to ride my '98 S3T - by that, I mean she can't even get the balls of her feet on the ground (never mind the heels). At best she can get the ball of one foot down by hanging off the side with the other foot about 6 inches clear of the deck. Not a practical ride.

The XLS is a good choice at present, given the vast improvement in brakes and suspension over any other Sportster. She handles the pace with a bunch of Buells without problem but the Sport is a real handful in bumpy corners and gets metal worn off the sidestand or muffler on smooth corners when she plays really hard. (Note: at this sort of speed, normal-height M2s ridden by less smooth riders are also shedding steel!)

So, would an M2L be enough improvement to make the change worthwhile? She's happy with the Sport engine, it's only the handling that causes dissatisfaction. Would the M2L just drag and piss her off?

I guess the XB9R might be another alternative.

What thoughts?

got it, ride it, love it. the guys down at the h.d. shop get to ride what ever comes in and they have no complaints about it opposed to the x1 or s3 especially because of the carburation.

Some answers Aaron posted on ATC to some good questions pertaining to shopping for a used Buell.

What is a Thunderslide and what does it do?

It's a lightweight throttle slide. The theory is that it improves throttle response. Opinions about it's effectiveness differ. I haven't used one, but I've heard enough folks who have used'em with unsatisfactory results to be biased against them.

What are the benefits of race ignition modules for carburated Buells?

Engine control modules (ECM's) are for fuel injected Buells. Carburated Buells have an ignition module available in a "race" version. I've tested them against stock modules and I can find very little difference. Except for the early ('97/'98) M2 Cyclones that were limited to 6500 rpm, both have the same rev limiter (6800). They also have the same ignition timing versus rpm curve, except the stock module kicks in a little retard above 6200rpm, about 5 degrees near as I can tell. There's a dyno chart on Badweb.

What points should I consider in evaluating the value of a used Buell V-Twin motorcycle?

Has it been properly maintained?

have all recalls and upgrades been performed (particularly front motor mount and rear swingarm)?

Tuned properly?

What do the plugs look like?

Any unusual noises?

Ever been dumped? If so, was it fixed properly?

What about the tires?

Has he ever changed wheel bearings? The rear wheel bearings are known to come loose in the hub on the right side.

Does he set his belt tension properly (i.e., flopping loose) when parked on sidestand?

Any bubbling in the paint or decals? Or has the tank been swapped for one with the raised lettering?

What about the front rotor, does it rattle? Has it been updated to the new style?

Any weeping on those WP forks?

Any oil under the shock?

Has he relocated the license plate holder and either cut or replaced the inner fender?

How's the gearbox?

Any hesitation on shifts to 3rd?

What about the battery? Does it have the kit to fit up a Blast battery? The stock one for S1's was too small and hard to get and an awful lot of S1's seemed to develop starter clutch problems. Does it ever make a grinding/crunching sound when you go to start it?

Hello everyone! I just bought a "rolling basket" 96 s2. It's mostly complete and runs (sorta). It'll make a great winter project. I do have one question, what's the difference between the stock 1200 sporty motor and a 96 s2? I looked up the serial #'s in the manual and it appears some knob put a stock sporty motor in this bike! Hopefully all the hop up goodies will still fit? I don't feel too burned as I only paid 2900 for it and it's got pm wheels and the double disc setup! Thanks for any info!

An S2 has a stock Sportster motor, you're fine!

9:1, highlighted fins, heavy flywheels, the works.

The only differences are the air cleaner & exhaust & probably the ignition module as well (not positive on that last one).

Blake: Hey, I didn't know early M2's had a 6500rpm limit. Guess it kinda makes sense, though, I suspect they wouldn't need a 6800rpm limit with those heads and cams.

Aaron: You just forgot is all. Do you recall where the heck we posted that table listing all the specs on each model/year Buell? We had the rev limits listed there. What is the limit on your S2?

Me forget? I'm 30-13 now, maybe that's why.

S2 limit? Hell if I know. I swapped the module before I ever rode the bike. I think it was Hoser who said it was 6200rpm, he probably knows.

Hello everyone! I have a Buell buying dilema. Your help is greatly appreciated, I currently ride a Fatboy and I've finally decided to trade her in for an X1. My dealer has both a 2000 & 2002 X1 (both new) on the lot. I would be able to get the 2000 (red with white striping) for a really good deal. Is there any difference between 2000 & 2002? Recalls? The 2000 is really nice!

Thanks!

Rob:
GO with the 2000 Race Stripe. Note that all 2000 X-1's and M2's should have either the Shock Reinforcement Package installed or the new rear shock. If the SRP is installed (it can be identified by the nicely turned aluminum cones secured to either end of the shock)you can request that the Dealer install the 2001 shock at no charge. Also he should replace the old front header support bracket with the new "Y" type front header support.
Besides that you will want:
A: Race ECM
B: K&N filter
C: Venturi
D: Slip-on after-market exhaust (IMHO White Brothers, Buell P&A slip-on (AKA Supertrap IDS)).
E: 2001 shifter
F: Patience during break-in and something to wipe the Sh*t eating grin off your face.

YRMV but, you will have fun.

Another quick question for you, what is Venturi, and I was planning on putting on the Buel Race Kit (I think this covers most of your points?). Sounds good?

Cheers!

Further to Neil S's excellent recommendations...

Also replace the primary tensioner with the new beefier version. :) Make sure the spark plugs are 10R12's instead of the 6R12's. The FULL race kit is THE BOMB. If you are selling the fatpig, you should have plenty of cash to lay out for the Race Kit. The ECM is essential; the header makes a significant improvement too. I'd get the '00.

Kahuna,

buy an extended warranty!!! You'll love the 00 X1 w/race kit.

Blake,

who makes a decent beefier primary tensioner? I've heard some horror stories about the stock unit. I may as well replace mine when the engine is being rebuilt.

Jeff - Buell does - New (2001+) Beefier Chain Tensioner: Part number 39975-90A . Make sure to get that exact part number not new old stock off the shelf. About $15, you'll also need a primary gasket, shifter shaft seal. If you search the archives Aaron has a step by step for this in the in the first "primary" archive (AUG 5TH?)

Only get the extended warranty if you have local dealers that are helpfull, or if you are a total klutz with a wrench.

My local dealers (two of em) have caused more problems then they have solved. Further, if I had to wait the kinda times they were quoting for a shop appointment, I would have missed most of last riding season.

I am not an expert mechanic by any means, but my Cyclone (which has had plenty of problems) has never had an issue that cost me more then $100 worth or parts or taken more then a day or too to repair.

Total out of pocket expenses for two years of ownership and lots of problems? Probably less then $600, and less then 25 hours of my time.

For me, the extended warranty would have been a waste of money so far.

You guys have been amazing help!

I just got back from the dealer and I'm really leaning towards red w/ white stripe (#262 0f 800). It's beautiful! I decided to wait till tomorrow in order to get my bro's advice on color. He thinks the mellenium silver is nicer?? The dealer has both. I'm going to get the paper work done in the morning. already included the race kit, CF rear fender/belt guard, buell helmet and trimming the massive plat holder on the papers.

Now all I need is for spring to start tomorrow!

Cheers,

Hi, everyone. I bought a 99 X-1 blue race stripe back in september, been reading the posts here for about a month. Anyways, I just have a few questions: what was the "SRP" recall kit for this bike (ie how could you visually tell if it has been done?), also the bike pings bad on acceleration from a stop, would the race kit with new ecm solve this? I was considering it anyway because the wileyco exhausts' welds have cracked in a few places. Any answers or other advice would be much appreciated.

Peter:
110% positive that the Race ECM will help your problem. Especially since you already have an aftermarket exhaust you are running LEAN!
Have your Dealer install the new front header support, it should be free. As far as the SRP your year should not have the SRP.If you had a 2000 it would need the SRP or the 01' shock. THe SRP (can't find any picts now) looks like a machined cone that fit over the back end of the shock and strap that goes over the front mount.

'99's got the SRP, pretty sure. I think. :)

Petey: Neil is right in that the Race ECM will richen up your A/F mixture. But if you are getting severe predetonation you might want to check your intake manifold seals. At a fast idle, spray contact cleaner or WD40 or a fine mist of water all around each of the three intake manifold seals. Any noticeable change in idle (almost always a reduction in idle) speed is an indication of a leak. Have your seals replaced with the latest/newest versions.

Also make sure that the static timing is set to factory specs, and that your bike has the 10R12 spark plugs, not the sportster 6R12 spark plugs.

I'm glad I'm not the one who has to decide between the red and silver bikes. Can't you just get both of them?

I don't want to throw a wet blanket on the party but my 2000 X1 is in the HD shop with a rod knock at 5000 miles. Consider the extended warranty.

Jeff, thanks for the heads up on the tensioner. Still no word. I have big bore kit on the brain.
