Just installed the Mikuni. What a great add-on. Does anyone get a slight whistling/whining noise from their Mikuni? I seem to remember reading a post on this and someone stating this is normal? Any help? |

I wouldn't know. With the race pipe, it could be whistling Dixie and I wouldn't hear it. BTW, Law, what pilot jet came installed in your Mikuni? Just curious. |

Can you believe a 20!!!!!! No wonder it was spitting out the exhaust! I threw in the 27.5 and am waiting for the snow and other crappy weather to pass so I can test my change. |

Yeah....me too (sigh). I loaded a 30 and have a 35 on standby. |

FINALLY got to ride (after being sick most of the week) and try out the 30 pilot...we're getting close. In the ballpark, anyway. I'm gonna play with the air screw adjustments and check the plug coloring after a couple hundred miles before I do anything drastic like move up to the 35. Throttle response is unreal. This thing is zero-to-ninety so fast it scares me. Anyone thinking about doing the Mikuni would be well advised...I think it's money well-spent. I know there are faster bikes out there, but this one is as fast as I need to go...ever. |

I agree, Kirk. The Mik HSR42 was one of the first things I did to my S1W when I bought it in 2000 used/new (94 miles) with a race oval and V&H on it. Of all the things I've done to my S1W, it was the best single addition. It makes the bike so snappy, absolute power be damned. Though I'm sure it didn't hurt it in that category either. Al |

Yeah, Al, I think if as many carbed Buell owners as there are out there knew what that one mod could do, you'd be out of stock all the time! BTW; do you have any new old stock Jagg oil coolers left (the vertical mounting ones?) I'm not too keen on the location of the new-style ones. Looks like trouble to me. |

Captn-what kind of set up do you have? I just finally got my bike all together and put one of those 42's on it and I have went pretty rich on the set-up. haven't tried it yet as I have a force exhaust and two sleeping kiddos. was going to hopefully run it tomorrow, and see where I was at with the 35 pilot and 167.5 main. I got ported/polished heads with that force and force intake, 536 cams and such. Hoping to finda a good starting point or a little advice. My mikuni came with a 20 pilot also. looking at the needle have you fiddled with it? looks to be a PITA, so I haven't touched it as of yet. |

Ceejay; With 536 cams, you might be at a good starting point. What are the cam specs? I'm running the Buell race kit, Andrews N8's and the HSR. I've got the stock 160 main in there and haven't fiddled with the needle yet. I think the needle comes stock in the #2 notch. I ended up with a 30 pilot, which for now, seems to be OK. I need to put a couple hundred on it to check it out. There's a lot of GOOD advice in the HSR tuning manual which should've come with your HSR. Take the time to read it, if you haven't yet. My best advice is to read the feedback your engine is giving you; study your plug color and pay attention to throttle response. |

256/266 duration with some 536 lift, got to get a new choke cable like a true hamfist I overtightned the cheap little plastic nut so I am still waiting to try it out. will let you know what happens. |

I got the 35 pilot and ended up going just a bit richer with the main to a 170 for a starting point. I still haven't gotten to ride it yet, waiting on a front rotor but without having the choke-I couldn't wait-I fired it up and it seems to idle pretty well with some good indications on the 3-4 thousand revs blasts I still need to do a final break-in so this is all initial testing but I think I have a pretty good starting point judgeing from the plugs and they way it sounds, still need to tinker with the timing/ignition but sounds good Thanks for the help. |

Hope it works out for ya. Don't be afraid to back down on the jetting, especially the main. Watch your plug color over the next hundred miles. If you get sooty, black deposits and/or black, wet, gasoline-smelling deposits it's an indicator you're running too rich. With those cams you might be OK. |

Captn-I think I am running pretty good as far as the jetting goes nice dark tan, but I just put a baffle in it, my nieghbors were giving me the look, so it might knock it over to the more rich side. One thing that I am not sure about and haven't been able to tune it out I am still getting the cough. I haven't had the money to put a new ignition on so I am not sure if that is what is causing it or not. Don't have any backfire out the pipe and it doesn't seem lean by the plug color so I haven't got that figured out yet. |

I would guess there are several things you should check. First, remove your VOES and make sure it works. You can do a simple operational check by hooking the plug to an ohmmeter and applying suction to the little hose. It should be a simple on/off operation. Wiggle the wires while you're doing this to check for any intermittent shorts or opens. It helps if your meter has an alarm, but you can get the same effect by watching the needle. I,ve got a story about this buried in the KV somewhere so I won't bother repeating it. If you have a MightyVac or similar vacuum pump with a gauge, the VOES is actually field-adjustable (little-known fact). Second- Check your timing. With the cams you're running, you might need an adjustable/variable advance curve ignition unit. I changed over to the Buell Lightning unit with the race kit at the same time as I installed the HSR. Third- I'd be checking for induction leaks around the intake wye seals. Idle the engine and spray WD-40 around the head-to-wye junctions (being careful not to get any in the air cleaner). If your idle picks up, you've got a leaker. Last, you can adjust the accellerator pump stroke to start earlier and see if that helps, hurts or makes no difference. Let me know what you find. |

right now I am thinking the second one, no problems with the VOES, nothing wrong with the seals, just replaced-they were pretty bad for only being about 6 yrs old, note to anyone who has an older bike. I did adjust my accelerator pump a bit. This baby runs hard, haven't had it much over 4,500 r's but it wants to pull anything above 3250, kind of sucks because it is real hard to keep her running low when I can feel it coming on. There's no coughing in the higher r's so maybe I'll kick the timing back a few degrees for the time being and then after break-or holding up a gas station I can kick it back up. |

After a couple of long rides I think I got her tuned right. I have a bit of hesitation from idle to WFO. Timing still? Plugs don't even look like thier being run if I take a regular ride. |

adjust the accellerator pump stroke to start earlier. I did this and it stopped the cough off idle while taking off. |
