The S1 has a mechanical tach? And it runs off the front wheel? You're working too much, mate. |

Oops, Guess I've put my foot in my mouth now. Tacho, not speedo, you idiot Peter. Just to be sure, does the SPEEDOMETER on an S1 run from the front wheel as I thought? PPiA |

The speedometer on an S2 runs from a front wheel drive gear and cable. I'm not sure what year they/Buell switched to electronic speedos, '98 might have been the transition year, so it might depend on the year of the S1 in question. |

So 1999 and newer Buell model years must have the electronic speedo then. |

Yep! But poor ole JT still ain't got his answer. He asked about swapping tachs. Anyone know if that is possible between an S1 and a '99 M2? |

I sort of recall something at least 6 months ago where someone was adding a tach. There was something to do with one extra wire or something. Sorry I can't be of more help, but I do recall it being discussed. ===== I just did a quick rummage and found this. Might be what I was thinking of. |

I've never tried it, but I can't imagine there would be a problem. It just counts pulses on the coil primary. An S1 has the same pulse to rotation ratio as an M2 (1 pulse per rotation). The signal comes from the ignition module, and the '99 M2 and '96-'98 S1 use the exact same module. |

Thanks guys! Don't burn yourself out on this. I just picked up a(nother) '99 Em Too for an obscene price. I also have a lead on a Tach off of a '98 S1. I think the two of them will get along well together. JT '99 Em Too X 2 '01 Insanity |

Steve H AKA OCbueller got the following in reply to his question about speedo sensor part numbers: Quote: I don't know the part number, but it is the same part as the sportster part. Anonymous adds: Well, not exactly... 74431-01Y Buell part. Now the questions: Is it really different than the HD part? Answer: Why would Buell make another part number for their bikes if it was not? Yes, it is different. |

That's got to be new then within the last year when I last bought one. The one in my M2 is # 74402-95. I just wrote the new number on the old bag, thanks. |

After I Nallinized the top end of my motor I got a new ignition module with single fire capabily. In order to use this feature (whose benefits are questionable) I got a Crane single fire coil. The darn thing was very heavy and large and I had a hell of a time fitting it to the bike. Crane has now released a new smaller and lighter unit that replaces the one I have. Has anyone tried one of these who could tell me if it fits in the stock location? |

Hey guys, Yesterday I installed the updated muffler bracket which required removal of the voltage regulator. I ran the bike afterward for a minute just to make sure everything was working properly but this morning the bike wouldn't start. It would turn over, but it wouldn't fire. As I expected, the plugs were wet so I gave them a quick cleaning and checked for spark. I did get some spark, but it's very weak and intermittent. Is this likely to be caused by something I did to the voltage regulator? Any clues as to what? I had heard some talk of a weak ground with the voltage regulator's new mount, anyone know any more about this? Thanks in advance. Spike '99 Cyclone |

Hello, I am putting an M2 headlight and flyscreen on my 2000 sportster. I ordered what I thought were all the parts, based off of another guys list who did it. But I seem to be missing the backside of the headlamp. I ordered the Headlamp assembly (PN 67974-97Y) and Headlamp Bezel (PN 68114-97Y). it also seems to be missing the rubber ring that sits between the bezels. Though I have never seen one up close (just pictues). I'm stationed in Spain, so no Buell dealers in the area. This seems my only resource. If anyone has a parts manual for an M2 (97), could you please post the PNs I am missing? Thanks for any help! Anyone thought about sticking a V-Rod headlight on a Buell? I was thinking that light would look right nice on my X1, wonder how much it costs and if it's available. Have fun! Dan |

Spitfire, Just replaced my headlamp bezel on my 2000 M2. On my bike, there is no rubber between the bezel parts or the case. There is no rubber ring in it at all. I've seen the M2 flyscreen mounted on other bikes. It looks great on anything. |

No rubber, Aye. Apreciate the help. Kind of fun ordering the parts, then trying to figure out how it goes together. Especially since there aren't any Buells I can see in person anywhere in southern Europe. |

Well I got my '98 S1 tach for Em Too Bee ('99), Now the $164,000.00 question. Does anyone have an S1 service manual that at the risk of copyrite infringement could scan and send me the page on tach wiring? It's only got 3 wires where the later tachs have 4. TIA JT |

JST: Check your mailbox. I found the wiring diagram for the '96/'97 S1. It should serve your purposes fine. It's a 225KB zoomable pdf of just the diagram; I pulled it from the old manual that Buell used to have online for all to see, so there shouldn't be a problem with copyrights. Blake |

I have a 98 S3T I want to relocate the regulator on. Has anybody out there did it, and if so got any photos. Just curious where its been relocated to on others' bikes. Thanks G Stewart |

Where do you want to relocate to? If you add the new front header support it gets turned 90deg. The S1's have their's back by the battery. Neil S. |

Gstewart: One place I have often thought of is under the lower triple tree. That is where early triumphs hung a similiar electrical device. Another place, on an S1/X1, would be behind the fly screen if using projector beam headlights. |

That'd be the Zener Diode then. The source of many Bonnie electrical failures in days of yore !!! Good vibrations killed 'em Rocket in England |
