Uncovered my S1W today for the first time since putting it away for the winter, and it runs like crap! It took a while to get it to fire up and then it won't idle. Lots of back-firing, but will rev freely past 2K rpm!? I took it for a short ride and it'll pull hard past 3K to redline, but will die as soon as i release the throttle? Any ideas? Your help is greatly appreciated. |

fuel gone off while in storage??? drain tank and refill with fresh and try it again, might help,or some dirt in the idle circuit of the carb..strip and blow out the jets maybe? not a tuber rider so maybe someone with specific knowledge might be along soon to help more (Message edited by rigga on April 09, 2005) (Message edited by rigga on April 09, 2005) |

Sounds like the dreaded intake manifold seals. SteveH |

Very likely clogged pilot jet or carb orifice. The orifices are small, even a small amount of varnishing of the jets throws the calibration out of wack and idle and throttle response gets all funky. I would take the carb off, and floss the jets with a strand of copper wire removed from a piece of stranded wire. DO NOT shove pins, needles, paper clips, or any thing else made of steel into jet orifices or you will just screw up the jet calibration. Al |

Gimme a call on Monday. I know I have one of the Mik easy kits in stock. I still think that the Mikuni was the single best mod I've made to my S1W. It is so much snappier than the CV carb. Al |

We've had a lot of those lately. Most likely the pilot as mentioned above. It wouldn't take much to pull it out and clean it out. I like the CV. If I had more throttle response than I do now I'd be in trouble. It's hard not to spin coming off slow corners as is. Recently I've experimented using a combination of parts from a Thunderslide and standard Dynojet kit. What I've come up with works quite well. |

I pulled the carb out last night, and sure enough, the pilot was completely blocked. i could see stuff coming out while flossing it. put the bike back together and it fired up with no choke! thanks guys!! and thanks Al for the new Mik hopefully it'll be here soon... |

Do yourself a favor next fall; when you put the bike up for the season, drain the bowl. Actually, anytime you're not gonna be riding for 30 days or more. You'd be surprised at how fast gasoline will evaporate. |

I've got the exact same problem as Kahuna. My S2 has been sitting for a year, and last night I fired it up (after replacing all the old stinky gas with fresh) and it won't idle. Just what I need, another project! Oh well, the shovel should be ready for paint this week. After I get it back together I'll move the S2 to center stage. rt |

the shovel is getting painted again? wow -- it should be getting really big by now, less'n your removing the old paint ;-} |

Not again---still! My paint jobs take a long time (as the S2 can testify!) rt |

S2 problem solved. Had them ol' "varnish-in-the-slow-jet" blues. Got a bunch of gunk out of the accelerator pump squirter, too. I guess I need to ride the darn thing once in a while! rt |

had the same problem myself this spring, with, of course, the same fix ;-} -- first time in years I neither added Stabil to the gas, nor drained the carb after the last ride -- I believe I'll find a NEW mistake to make this year ;-} |

I'll send you a list of my recent mistakes, maybe there's one on there that'll be new to you. 'Course, it's a long list! Hope your ISP is up to the task! rt |

This thread saved me! My bike sat for a while, it ran but would not idle. I read this thread, checked my slow-jet and sure enough it was clogged. Cleaned it out and the bike runs better than ever. Not only does it idle, but now it doesn't 'pop' when cruising with steady throttle. Thanks for the great information!!! -Marc. (Message edited by motomadman on October 09, 2007) |
