After having my 4th speed sensor go "poof" in less than a year I really need some insight as to why they are failing. Dealer informs me they are $51 bucks a piece and my warranty is almost gone - the next one will be on me. And the one after that.On and on, ad nauseum. Any thoughts on installing a diode inline, a capacitor, maybe both? Seems like I read or heard somewhere that they die from electrical spikes coming from the speedo. Or, is it heat? Or something else entirely? Help! This is driving me nuts! |

I just got my bike back from it's first speedo failure at 1500 miles. I'm afraid i'm in for a rough road with these speedo sensors. |

Bullitt, what does the dealership say about having to replace 4 sensors in less than a year? Do they aknowledge the fact that there IS a design problem here. Just wondering if they have offered any insight from Buell about possible cures for this. Seems I've read that Buell won't even admit there is a problem. |

Check into part number 74431-01Y - It might be a new replacement speedo sensor. Can someone else verify that number? I seem to recall some discussion about that somewhere. Jim |

There is a new sensor. Not sure what the new part # is though. Get the new sensor and you should be good to go. Blake (calling Sport Twin for a new sensor) |

First, let me apologize for not having gone through the gauge archives first. Turns out this has been quite a popular subject. I let frustration get the better of me. Kevin, (good name mate!) my dealer just shrugs their collective shoulders and jams in another sensor. The service writer actually said - "See you in 3 mos for the next one!" He rides an M2 same as mine, and has already been through a couple of sensors himself. They don't have any idea. I found a couple of possible solutions in the archives, but no follow up as to whether or not they went the distance. Reepicheep/Bill developed an inline filter. Lsr bbs/Neil moved the power wire off the ignition ckt and onto the acc ckt. Guys - how are your sensors holding up? My dealer claims not to know anything about a new sensor design, although that doesn't mean much. I'd have to get the p/n and hand hold them to obtain one. Even though BMC has come up with a new/better sensor, I have a brand new one in my trans now that I didn't have to pay for. I'd like to see it last a little while. Kevin (also) |

My dealer says they are not aware of a speed sensor problem or an updated part #. |

Mine is working like a champ. Sensor 1... 3000 miles. Sensor two, 50 miles. Then I installed the filter, and have gone nearly 5000 miles since then with no problems. Not a statistically valid proof, but still good news... Bill (who is inclined to suspect transient reverse voltages and thinks the diode is what saves the day but would probably put the inductor on as well anyway) Kilgallon |

Advice on sensors use the new number 74431-01y. DO NOT tie the wires down tight in any location. The wires to the sensor are very fine, very few strands. the wires don't like to be bent. change primary fliud more often to prevent metal particle build up on the sensor. |

Is anyone sure that there is a new sensor available? I read where people say there is a new part number but that doesn't mean that the sensor is any different. I hope it's new and improved. Just wondering if anyone has heard from Buell that these sensors are actually different. |

Bill and Neil - 5000 is a lot further than mine have ever lasted! I'm going to Radio Shack tomorrow to get the parts AND I'm going to move the power supply away from the ignition circuit. I'll also ring the Buell store with the above P/N and see what they say. Kevin |

I'll tell you what I did...used a bicycle speedometer and battery powered light for it. Mounting was trial and error as vibration loosend things up and even broke the thin wire as I orginally secured it...but once it's all on proper, it's good. Less weight, very simple, and all you have to worry about is changing batteries every couple years. |

Why would Buell assign a new part number to an existing part? Sheesh! Come on Kevin! LOL. The sensor is a new/different part. It is different from the old sensor. This has been confirmed by a VERY reliable source. Anon: Can you say what improvement(s) the new sensor includes? |
