Fireboltgeo, I will be coming through Ohio on the way down Tuesday as well. Care to meet up somewhere and head down together? ...I'll be in the truck, though... |

>>>I haven't been riding that long :-) This could be a wonderful experience for you. If you'll remind me a week or so ahead, I'll write a piece with some suggestions to help you get the most out of the event. Most importantly, get ready for one of the funnest times you have ever had and prepare to meet some of the best friends you'll ever have. Heck, I may need to ride down and give a riding lesson. I'll be there! Leaving Buffalo late on the 21st. I probably won't be able to make Statesville in time for check in. I will probably just shoot for Boone on the 22nd. Smoke, I am planning on trying tenting off the bike on this trip. I have not finalized any campground yet. Have you booked anything yet? I am planning on hitting the Dragon Saturday and Sunday(24th/25th). Anyone else planning on running it while there? |

My sisterinlaw lives near boone. There is a lot of flooding up there right now. I think they were saying 80 roads were washed out. I know I-40 was closed yesterday, which is a big deal. But the ridge ride is a few weeks away. I would expect them to have things cleaned up well before then. So long as another hurricane doesn't come through, I would expect things to be ok. |

Flooding and Rock Slides Close Sections of Parkway Date September 10, 2004 A half-dozen rockslides have severely damaged and forced the closure of sections of the Blue Ridge Parkway in western North Carolina. A number of visitor facilities along the length of the 469-mile scenic road have also been temporarily closed by wind, power outages and flood from the remnants of Hurricane Frances. A preliminary estimate of damage to the road and visitor facilities is $6 million. Road closures are as follows: Milepost 317 near Linville Falls to mile 325, from Milepost 344 at NC 80 near Marion to Milepost 355 at Mt. Mitchell State Park, and from Milepost 412 at US 276 south of Mt. Pisgah to Milepost 443 at US 23/74 near Waynesville The major rockslides are at Mileposts 322, 345, 348,349, 413 and 429. Most of those between Milepost 322 and 349 took out portions of the motor road and this segment of the Parkway, from just south of Linville Falls to south of Buck Creek Gap at NC 80 near Marion, may be closed for up to a year. The slides at 413 and 429 are also extensive but do not appear to have damaged the road’s supporting structure significantly. Detour routes will be announced and posted. Those planning to travel to or from the Parkway via US 276 should be aware that this highway is currently closed both east and west of its intersection with the Parkway. NC 215 is closed to the west. Other crossing state and federal highways in western North Carolina have also been damaged and the public is encouraged to check with local transportation or law enforcement authorities to be sure roads that intersect the Parkway are open. Superintendent Dan Brown has discussed the slides with the Federal Highway Administration, which provides assistance for emergency Parkway repair, and full engineering assessments will be made early next week and road repair initiated shortly thereafter. |

all the areas that have been closed to date are SOUTH of Boone. The Southern Loop (on Thursday) and the Northern loop (to be ridden on Friday) should not be affected, unless Ivan has something to say about it. Deals Gap weather shows rain this coming Thursday Friday...... Weather.com has a forecast for rain Tuesday through Sunday for Danville, VA, where the AMA Superbike races will happen at nearby VIR. We'll get wet, just be ready for it. |

Well, sounds like I'm out. Between the very uncertain weather conditions and my lodging getting washed away, I'm thinking I'm going to postpone and head down later this year or early next year to visit the 3%'ers on my own time. -=waves goodbye to his $40=- ...never even got a t-shirt out of them this time...what exactly was this money for? |

Darthane, don't throw in the towell yet! Ivan might drift more to the west, maybe less rain for the Boone area. My plan was to leave here Monday the 20th, should know by then what Ivan did to the area, then I will make a decision. I am really looking forward to the rides and meeting alot of Buellie's. |

Honu, if you can recommend a cheap place to stay or a nearby campground I may still make it, but I can't afford to pony up a few hundred dollars for lodging with all the home improvements I'm in the middle of right now. I'd surely like to get down there, especially since I bought new tires and changed my fork oil SPECIFICALLY for this trip. Maybe I can make it down for just a couple days instead of the five I was originally planning. Anybody got space on the floor of their hotel room? |

I'm driving up on Friday, I'll let you know how the roads are when I get up there. I live about 35 minutes southwest of Boone. People up there say it isn't really that bad, and road crews are working fast due to the upcoming tourist season. |
