From Michael George in Bend: Posted on Monday, January 10, 2011 - 07:25 pm: -------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Hi all, Now that we're talking SPLASH again I can offer some ideas for the OR route and see where we go from there. After marking my favorite roads on the map and trying to see how we might link them together for maximum fun (I'm assuming allowing for 3 days of riding in Oregon based on our conversations at Border Raid last year) my suggestion is: Overnight first night in Estacada (SE of Portland) - not sure about hotels in town but it isn't far off I205 so staying in Portland would work too - lots of hotels near the Airport. First day - ride Hwy 224 along Clackamas River to Detroit - this is one of the best biker roads in the state so off to a good start! Then it's scenic Hwy 22/20 across Santiam Pass to Central Oregon. This is only about a 3-4 hour ride but other loops can be done if more riding is wanted. I suggest staying in Bend for 1-2 nights depending on when you need to get home. Mt. Bachelor Village has multibedroom condos across the Cascade Lakes Hwy from our house. These can be shared by several people to save $$$ and they are within walking distance from our house. Second day: Ride over Hwy 242 (McKenzie Pass) west of Sisters (narrow, twisty, scenic road) then south on Aufderheide road past Cougar Hot Springs to Oakridge. Then Hwy 58 to the Cascade Lakes Hwy cutoff heading back North around Mt. Bachelor and into Bend. This will put you at our house for a late afternoon barbecue after a great 6 hour or so loop of festive riding. Third day: Head east out of Bend on backroads to Prineville then on the Post-Paulina road to John Day (110 miles of fast open road and canyons with very little traffic). Head north from Mt. Vernon to Monument, Spray, Fossil, Antelope, Shaniko. From here anyone who needs to head home early can head north. Otherwise, back to Bend and head home the next day by your own chosen route. How's that sound? MG |

From Green Eric in Portland: Posted on Sunday, January 16, 2011 - 01:28 pm: -------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Hey everyone, sorry for being absent from BadWeb for so long.. Mike and I are pretty much on the same track. I was going to suggest this: Start in Hood River. Then up Hy 35 via Parkdale and then hook in to FS46 via Timothy Lake (http://oregonmotorcyclist.com/ridepage.php?page=rd 42). Then on to Detroit and then to Sisters via McKenzie Pass (http://oregonmotorcyclist.com/ridepage.php?page=mc kenzie_hwy). I like Sisters, it's a cool small town. Next, head through Bend to Cascade Lakes Byway (http://oregonmotorcyclist.com/ridepage.php?page=ca scadelakes). Then up the Aufderheide (http://oregonmotorcyclist.com/ridepage.php?page=au fderheide) and back over McKenzie Pass (again!! - - trust me, you'll want to!) and on into Bend. Next, various routes for folks heading home the next day. However, if there's a way to get the Crooked River Backcountry Byway into the riding, I definitely suggest it. (http://www.byways.org/explore/byways/68920/travel. html) Anyway, that's my 2cents. |

Loni Thanks for taking the bull by the horns Loni. This SPLASH looks like it's shaping up to be a great one. With all due respect Eric, without having ridden them, I think Michael’s route selection looks better. Cheers Jimmy |

Here's a visual aid (of my guesstimate) for the route MG suggests above for those like me who are unfamiliar with the area. http://goo.gl/maps/WhVD I gave Eric's route the same treatment as MGs. http://goo.gl/maps/8rnB |

I will agree to go and stay 2 nights in Bend as long as we go to Baldy's BBQ for dinner one night. This place has the BEST BBQ Ribs and Chicken! Gauranteed you will be lickin your fingers! Check out the web site. http://www.baldysbbq.com/ Been looking at at room rates at Mt Bacherlor Village, not to bad, looks nice. Thinking of making our reservations soon. go to www.mtbachelorvillage.com. They have a swimming pool and some rooms have hot tubs. I also agree with Jimmy on taking Michaels route. I have done both and both are awesome. If we were to meet in Woodland on Friday night we would do the usual dinner gathering at the park then on Sat morning leave Woodland and head south on 1-5 to 205 to Clackamas. This is getting exciting!!! |

Thanks for the alternate ideas, Eric. It made me think about modifying my route just a bit. I think Hood River is still an option if that's what people want to do vs. Portland but I would recommend riding the 224 Clackamas River Hwy into Estacada and back if you start in Hood River because that part of the road is not to be missed. I really like the idea of riding down to Mckenzie Pass on the first day and then riding it over to Sisters. This would make Day 1 longer and more twisty but some could opt for the shorter route across Santiam Pass if they wish. Then on the second day we would be riding McKenzie Pass in the opposite direction, which is way different so I think that would be a lot of fun. It's especially good to ride McKenzie Pass early in the AM as it does get quite a lot of tourist traffic and is a very narrow twisty road. As far as the Crooked River byway goes, if I am looking at the map correctly, that is the back way that we will be taking out to Prineville on Day 3. |

More thoughts on "Son of SPLASH"... Baldy's BBQ is a 5-10 min walk from Mt. Bachelor Village and our house. Also, less than a 5 min walk is Cascade Lakes Brewery - one of Central Oregon's 11? brewerys - crafters of fine brews like Blonde Bombshell (lite) and 20" Brown Ale (dark). Mixed six packs can be bought straight from the brewery cheaper than in the stores ($7). If I remember right a bunch of us at Border Raid were talking about extending the ride a few days so I took that into consideration when proposing the route. I'm thinking get to Portland on Thursday night. Friday is the Estacada Road, Santiam Pass, McKenzie Pass option to Bend. Overnight in Bend Fri, Sat and Sun for those who want the longer ride and have the time. First loop to the west and then south and then back to Bend for BBQ at our place on Saturday. Second loop to John Day and back on Sunday - either to Bend for another night or head home. Sound like a plan? |

Hey Chris, I thought of meeting in Woodland on Thursday night too. Not a bad idea since the Friday ride is not too long. Just wondering how the traffic would be crossing the river on Friday morning... |

MG, I like the idea of riding on Friday. That is if the Canadians can make it to Woodland on Thurs night. The ride crossing the bridge on Friday should not be that bad. If we leave the park around 9 or 10 I think the worst traffic would be over. |

I'm good for Woodland on Thursday night. Was planning on spending a bit more time on the bike this SPLASH anyway.

"The ride crossing the bridge on Friday should not be that bad. If we leave the park around 9 or 10 I think the worst will be over." I-5 bridge??? I suggest either Washington 14 to the Hood River bridge or The Longview bridge and cut over thru the Yamill Valley to Mollala/Estacada. Less freeway = more fun. Now all I need is a bike....... |

Shotgun, The plan (I think) was to go directly from Woodland to Clackamas on 205. Hitting the back roads from there to Estacada following the Clackamas River to Detroit. Like Chris said the planning is still in progress, but what is planned is going to be fun for all. I hope that you are going to be able to be with us this year, would not be the same without you!! Sounds like a plan! Loni - The Rainbow Motel comes to mind in Bend - it's a small mom and pop operation near downtown. We used to stay there before I moved here when we were meeting to ski or ride. I haven't been there in awhile but it was still there last I looked. Otherwise there are lots of other choices all over town and it's not that big a town. Here's a link to the hotel - if you find something else and have a question let me know. http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g51766-d64 7605-Reviews-Rainbow_Motel-Bend_Oregon.html Sisters would also be an option for Friday night, although it's only about 20 mins from Bend and I don't know much about hotel accommodations there - it's a pretty small town - about 1500 I think. Is everyone going to stay at the Lakeside in Woodland again Thursday night then? MG |

Also, a reminder about Mt. Bachelor Village... it's a bunch of condos that should sleep several people so that would cut costs for those wanting to share a place. I'm sure there are better deals for individuals or couples at smaller standard room hotels. If there are more questions as you try to make reservations keep posting. I will check in regularly and see if I can help. MG |

I agree that staying in Bend not Sisters would be best. Not having to pack up all the gear is always nice. I will check out the Rainbow Motel and let everyone know. |
