Congrats Jim. I may go that way too when the Uly goes. Uly #1 is just over 50k miles and I plan to ride it until the wheels fall off. I hope that will not be soon. I know you have read all the reports on the V-strom 650 like me. Chances it will have any problems below 100K, very slim. At 130k it dies, you throw it away and get another. Like Jerry the front end of the bike is the only reason I do not have one now. I like everything else about the bike and hands down the best bang for the buck on two wheels. Enjoy! Nance, congrats. Sandhills Cycle has a 650 V-Strom that I have been looking at. I am very interested in your opinions of the bike once you get it. To me it "looks" like a very big bike for a 650cc. This particular one has the full complement of Givi hardcases which only adds to the big bike impression. Keep us upto date! |

Anybody home? Kinda...Got 'home' from VIR Sunday night about 9:30. Geoff May taking 6th in American Super Bike on Erik Buell Racing's 1125RR was a great topper to the weekend. The hospitality Hotrats (Andy) and his family showed me was beyond compare, however the hospitality he showed a couple of former Elves who were at VIR for the TTXGP races (Electric bikes) was STUPENDOUS. Had a fantastic weekend surrounded by friends both old and new (or not so old). It was needed and truly appreciated and enjoyed. Now it's back to the grindstone. And maybe, just maybe, I'll be 'home' soon... 1313 |

Brankin It was good seeing you again. Definitely a good show was put on by Geoff May and the boys from Erik Buell Racing. I also enjoy watching Eslick, I think he could ride anything fast. Mike |

Hi, just wanted to say hello to everyone. I am doing pretty good in school(we have lost about 60% of the class I started with). Long ways from done. I am in the first class with actual running motorcycles, doing electrical. I have bored out cylinders, re-seated valves, taken engines and transmissions apart, measured them to the 10,000 of an inch. Only thing Buell I have touched are wheels though. We did have some guys do research and found out that Honda has 2 models that have more percentage American parts than Harleys... Crazy. Anyway I spent some time riding the YZF and was suprised at how well it rode and ran. Started first time everytime. Never ran hot even stuck in traffic for 1 1/2 hours at 99 degrees. Had good power, transmission, and Ergonomics. But I sold her last week, after riding her for 4 1/2 months. More than doubled my money. Bought my brothers bike, I just have to get it from NC to FL. It just needs fork seals, which are easy. Well gotta run, hope you all are doing well and if you get to Fl, look me up. oh and here is a Pic of the new bike...I know its not a buell, but I have improved and with limited funds... Larry

We are home It was a 2007 Vstrom with 2705 miles when I picked it up. Now it's a 2007 Vstrom with 3206 miles. I like it. A lot. I bought it sight unseen, so I'm happy about that. I've never told him this, but I hate researching these things, so I just listen to Carlos and buy what he says are good bikes. So far it's worked out. Apparently riding 500 miles with out a license plate isn't really a big deal. Who knew. Some people have questioned whether the DL650 has enough motor for 2 up riding, so I was worried about that. For me it isn't a problem. I can tell the bike doesn't have the low end grunt of the Uly, but I did briefly touch on 100 just to see how it would do and it wasn't a problem. That was two up, with a combined weight of 420 lbs (which is about 100 lbs less than it was 6 months ago, but that's a different story.) The bike gets blown around in the wind quite a bit. I had been informed of that by several people, and it was another area I had concerns about. It doesn't bother me too much. People say the same thing about the Blast, and that never bothered me either. The Uly suspension is better, I noticed that on the bumps. On the plus side, the bike is shorter than the Uly, which makes getting a passenger on a LOT simpler. It's still tall enough that my legs are comfortable, though I can't dangle them like I can on the Uly. The bike is QUIET. I didn't realized how much I was going to like that, but I can talk to Amanda if we are riding through town, and I don't even haft to shout. That is very nice. It's also less fatiguing that way. The Givi back on the back is spectacular. It's Italian. I'll eventually realize that's all I have to say about it. There are no latch issues. It actually disturbs me not to have to fiddle with the latch because I'm so used to it on the HB bags. I love LOVE the engine. It's a V-twin, but 90 degrees instead of the Buell's 45. 90 Degree vtwins can be easily balanced, so there are basically no vibrations. It does not have the low end torque of the Buell, but low end torque isn't bad at all. It doesn't seem to mind pulling at low RPM, which gives it a very wide power band. It's fine in 5th gear at 35 mph, so I never really have to take it out of 5th if I don't want to. I'm not used to chain lash. Speaking of chains, someone tell me about o-ring chains. Am I supposed to oil/clean this chain? If I am... How? One parting picture. I was not going to be this person: And I used to laugh at Mike Warren. |

Good lord Jim...You need to donate to those less fortunate non-Buell owners. I am doing ok...I miss Kylie badly and can't wait to see her, and I miss riding with you guys. Still working on getting the Honda here, so if anyone is making a trip to Florida let me know...LOL. I am happy about the Honda as it gives me Fuel injection to play with. And the Bike is in like new condition. If any of you do come down, be sure to let me know. I have space to crash, and a Garage to keep the Bikes safe. And I can walk you through the school if interested. Its actually pretty nice to work on just about anything right now. I have worked on just about everything but Buell, BMW(a new class here, but you have to maintain a certain GPA and attendance to be eligible), Victory, Ducati(which we have discussed in detail). Harley's treatment of Buell and their future plans to expand Europe and even shrink US(and about 60% of the students are here for Harley) leads me to stick with Honda. Harley's engines are automobile based, while the electronics are based on and even purchased from "no don't say it...rice burning companies". Like Showa forks and the Carbs and Fuell injection Honda subsidiaries all. The drive by wire, is from another manufacturer. I can't say that anyone manufacturer is heads above others as all seem to have their own characteristics. I will say I am glad that I will not have to take many V-rods apart. Probably my favorite Harley and I wouldnt mind having one... But as a Tech...I would pay someone else to work on it. Watched a video on getting to the top end, and I got tired watching it. Standard and Metric tools and a ridiculous amount of work, just to get to the top end. I learn something New every day and have a long ways left to go... Oh and sorry, only family gets discounts.... |
