Before my accident, I was a Sandhog and I loved the work. I was especially fond of drilling with a Jackleg Drill, which is used in Hard Rock Mining. Anyway, I got the bug to go looking for the Hoosac Tunnel. It's an amazing feat of engineering for its day; and it construction took the lives of well over 100 men. It took me a few tries, as Google maps will put you in a farmers yard, and not near the Tunnel. I had to wander around a bit, but I finally found the Eastern Portal.
That was a couple of weeks ago. Yesterday, I was in the area with my wife, and since she hadn't seen the Tunnel, and she's been listening to me talk about it, we decided to ride to it. When we got there, we could see light in the Tunnel.
Since it's almost five miles long, we figured it must be an oncoming train, so we waited and watched the light get brighter
Finally, the train appeared
For me, this was a rush. The fact that the area around the Tunnel is just loaded with heavenly roads for a Buell Rider, is just frosting on the cake. If you ever get the urge to find the Tunnel, make a day of it and spend the time riding around the area. you won't regret it. |

I can't believe i just noticed this thread.I've wanted to see the tunnel for years. We ride by it while doing the Mohawk Trail i think. It's in Florida? One of the earliest (The Earliest?) tunnels constructed in the U.S. (Message edited by ducxl on July 10, 2009) |
