I think Im going retarded! Wanted to go to the meeting last night. OBVIOUSLY, I didnt make it. Why, you ask? Left the shop yesterday to go have dinner with the little lady, left the directions to Hal's at the shop. Figured it wasnt very far away, so I'll go anyway. Could'nt be too hard to find. Well......I passed by the Boucher car dealership at about 7:30.................one hour late! Why was I that late? ......BBQ Ribs! Not only did I get cought up in dinner, the time written on my directions states that the meeting was at 6:45. But, I found those directions quietly sitting on my workbench this morning. So.......because of my...."moment of clarity".....I wont get to meet you guys till next month. Just thought you would get a kick out of my D-oh moment! See ya next month!!! |

heh, don't sweat it! This week's meeting we mainly talked about the future, and a *HUGE* renewed interest by some of Hal's employees after attending a Vegas "back to the track" event. We converted Budc this way as well Some *VERY* cool stuff going on it Hals in the coming months, as far as the Buell side of things are concerned. Next month, we're going to plan out some rides. gunnut, PM me your email address and I'll add you to the Brew City mailing list. BTW, you know, you should be ashamed of yourself.... Being a machinist with a bone stock bike! Sheeze, these new guys |

WHOA WHOA WHOA.....OOOWWWW! I just got the bike in November. Im working on baby moon frame sliders RIGHT NOW! Just found a nice stick of aluminum. Come on, it took me months to find an unmolested example. I'll post pics of the sliders as soon as they are done. . It seems the more I look at the bike, the more parts I'm thinking about making. The lil lady has no interest in riding on the back (hence the 12R), but loves the fact that I can stay at my shop and keep out of trouble. Tit for a tat I suppose (literally). I'll PM ya right away! |

heh, I just had to rib ya a bit. Being a glorified machinist that now spends his days drawing 'purdy 3D pictures all day. You got a CNC lathe? I've got nothing but mills and sinker EDMs at my disposal here. |

One CNC lathe, and one CNC mill. My lathe is a Mazak quick turn 8, so my size is limited. It has a 8 in. chuck, and a collet set up. Got a coupe manual mills, big drill presses, and a grinder. The mill is pretty big (44/18/20). Havin some fun today. Working on a prototype disc brake for go cart racing.. I love doin R&D. Keeps the grey matter occupied. |

Greetings- My name is Jason Nennig and I have just signed up to be in your club. I was instructed to introduce myself by Bud (seems like a great guy, full of info) on the phone tonight. I live in Mukwonago, WI. And anyway, I own a 2004 firebolt XB12 and have been on two wheels for about 17 years. I have owned and ridden a slew of Jap and Italian bikes over the years but now love my Buell. I look forward to meeting you all at next months meeting- Peace out |

Sorry Gunut, I have no clue how to post pics- I'm a ignorant retard when it comes to the computer and my friends and family seem to be of no help. Maybe you or someone else can show me in the future. My 12R is rather plain- red with gold wheels, I'm sure you have seen a bunch like it out there. I think the red is sexy though, See Ya!!! |

Hey guys, I don't know if any of you are following My Winter Projects...but I could use some help. I need some used oil, or advise on getting my lubrication system flushed. I opened my drain plug today, and a few ounces of parts cleaner ran out. I'm concerned that there is a little residual in there yet, and don't want to use new oil to run a few miles then drain. TIA |

Please don't touch the used oil. You would be much farther ahead using new, low cost, conventional oil for the flush. I would fill it, run it for a bit, than drain it out with all the crapola and then add some good syn. stuff. A new filter definetly would not be a bad idea also. Hi, my name is Ryan and i work at Hal's . I am in Sales, and also help Bud with Rentals. I wouldn't use the used oil either, and if you are looking to just flush the system with some oil and not break the bank, Hal's has quarts of 10w40 for only $2/qt. Might be a good option to flush with, and then refill with some good stuff. |

Jason, WELCOME! Ryan, I'd stay FAR away from the used oil thing. Use either what Ryan suggested, or go get a jug of Rotella-T oil(It's diesel oil), cheap, and actually works very well in air cooled engines since it handles the high temps. But stay away from the used stuff! |

Oh, and jason has it right, change the filter. The parts cleaning fluid will contaminate the filter. And stay away from the FRAM filters, and either get Wicks/Napa, or the filters from Hals. |

Alright. I'll stay away from used oil...and I was planning to change the filter w/ one from Hals after flushing. Anyone care to explain what could be in someone else's used oil that wouldn't occur in my engine normally? Also would I be missing something if I followed this plan. 1: Put 1/2qt New oil into reservoir, allow to sit for 24hrs before draining. 2: Drain through the oil lines. 3: Fill w/ the cheapest oil available that meets the basic lubrication needs of the engine, and drive around the block a few times. 4: Drain and remove filter 5: Replace filter, and fill w/ appropriate oil for service in a V-twin. 6: Fill gas tank, and run about 100mi. 7: Drain and remove filter. 8: Replace filter, and fill w/ synthetic... |

Now, here's my advice. Take it for what it is. But, I did spend 10 years as an automotive machinist rebuilding everything from Kohler singles to Cat diesel engines. So I know just enough to be dangerous 1.) Drain EVERYTHING(remove muffler and drain out crankcase as well) 2.) Replace filter 3,) Fill with fresh cheap oil. Run it for about 5-10 minutes, or until your fan goes on. 4.) Repeat step one thru 3 and run for about 500 miles, and then switch to the "good stuff". Staying away from used oil is nothing more than a precaution. You have NO IDEA what can be in that oil, and you need AS MUCH added lubrication that new oil will give you to help somewhat dilute the solvent. Why is there parts cleaner in there to begin with? If something was machined/rebuilt, it should have been cleaned/flushed with a good detergent/soapy water. |

I second Steve's advise, seem like a lot of work but better safe than sorry. Premature engine rebuilds are an expensive, pain that can be avoided with a little precaution. Also, stay away from those cheap auto engine flush mixes sold in auto parts stores, they can really lead to problems if not used and drained correctly. Take it from someone who has learned it the hard way. |

Oh, and I must say, I saw in one of Steve's posts, he gave the advise to try Rotella-T. I ran Rotella in my RC51. I used the full syn. stuff in the blue bottle- worked great and cheap also. I did notice it broke down a bit faster than some other very premium oils I tried but all in all, good stuff. For what it's worth, it also did not slip the wet clutch in any of my machines. Thanks Steve- Good Call |

The solvent was in the rear swing arm. I washed it before prepping/painting, and washed the inside to prevent oil from "creeping" out and ruining the finish. Nothing was machined/rebuilt. I thought I'd gotten all but some residual cleaner out of there, and had planned to run dyno-oil for a short time to get rid of the rest. But having the lines connected to the bottom, and seeing so much run out. I'm a little paranoid. |

If you use cheap fresh oil, and fill it to the proper level, you should not have a problem. Dont go riding. Just let the bike run for a few minutes with the cleaning oil in. If you have a major concern about the amount of solvent in the system, disconnect your oil lines, and put a fan next to them overnight. Solvent evaporates pretty readily. If you can get the air to circulate through even part of the system, It should remove most of it. If you are going to try that, do it BEFORE flushing with oil. Any solvent that is left over will get removed by the flush. Just make sure you dont go riding around very far with the oil that may have solvent in it. I think you will be fine dood! |
