Well, my wonderful weather turned cloudy but I took the Versys out anyway. Boy is it fun to hear the motor as the needle sweeps past 9 grand! Had to sleep on the couch and tolerate the unusual bumps in the night in a now foreign to me home; and the dogs snore! I've kept it queit so far but I was informed the day before I left my Grandfather suffered a stroke. I spent the last two days visiting him and trying to set things up for my Grandmother. Looks like NUTS will be shuttling between Roanoke and Florida more than I'd like, but duty calls. I'll be home in a few days and can't wait to see my mountains again. Hope you all have the best of times. |

Nutty Nutbag, Hope all is well down there with your gramps. I'm a little concerned cause I ain't heard from you. I need you back man. I went this morning and whacked five but made a huge mistake. Instead of going to get them after dropping them I just sat there and kept hunting hoping to get the elusive 6th one. By the time I got up to get them I could only find three. I hate the thought of killing and not finding them but I guess the predators will keep them from going to waste. I heard two coyote calling back and forth to one another at about 6:45. We have GOT to give it a try soon man before that dude beats us to them. Anyways enjoy the pic

NUTS has returned to the Commonwealth. Though, I'm petty dazed from my 15 hour drive after severe sleep deprivation. |

Took my little sis out yesterday for her very first squirrel hunt. Seems like only yesteryear that the Turtlehugger gave me my indoctrination into all that is squirrel. We got up close and personal with a bunch of fox-squirrels and a few grey's. We also got to see a small red fox come past us in the woods. A terrific day.

Nuts, Cute looking sis, you training her to be a squirrel dog?Part of the indoctrination process. What did it cost you to have her hold the squirrels for the pic? |

I'll be heading up to the club this afternoon for some game watching. Gimme a call Turtlesnuggler when you know what you're up to. It's about 15 out and Huckleberry is in need of some miles. Guess I'll suit up and get the heated gear cranking. Heading over to Salem for breakfast with the other moto-morons. Whatcha say I take 12 O'clock knob over Charlie? Might be a wee bit icy. Maybe I'll go over Poor Mountain instead. NUTS |

Nuts, if your taking one of those routes at 15 deg. you deserve what you get.The bad thing is you'll be riding alone.Should probably just leave the tire warmers on till you get to Salem. How did you guys like that bike jump last night? That free fall would definitely tighten your shorts up. |

Charlie, I ended up hooking up the heated vest lead to the Suzi and put my hippo hands on there as well. I layered double long-johns under fleece pants and my normal riding gear. I wore a neck gaiter all the way up to my eyelids. Once suited up I plugged the vest in and tried to keep the revs up so as not to drain the battery. I was pretty sure it would pull the amperage but just in case I ran it hard through all the gears! I rode up Bent Mountain, bypassing 12 0'clock knob in favor of route 612 over Poor Mountain and into Salem. The front wheel problem has gotten worse and I am now sure the bike is trying to kill me! Tomorrow I will be fitting a new tire. I didn't see any critters en-route and I was looking awful hard for them. Before transitioning to the dirt section of poor Mountain Rd I had to stop, take my gloves off and shove my hands under my vest to warm them up. About a minute is all they needed. We had breakfast at Famous A's in Salem with no less than 10 bikes showing up. See, I'm not the dumbest fool around; just the youngest! NUTS |

Let's give the Turtledover a big round of applause. The first opportunity of the new year and he goes right for the jugular: the elusive double bail! Twice in one day, it's inconceivable. NUTS |

I don't guess all the ball games today chould have anything to do with it?Plus he is starting to show his age. In the "Old Days" we just wore a snowmobile suit, y'all don't wear those anymore?Except for hands, feet and face, we never got cold.Im glad you found some guys to ride with in the extremes, got to be more sane than diving buckass naked in a lake somewhere up north. |

after hassling Jaxson for the double bail I took the newly front tired Suzi out for a spin. I installed a reserve tire I had so as to rule out any possibility of it being the bearings. The bike rode considerably better until I had a bout 20 miles on it. Then it started again; easy at first and the warmer the bike got the worse it got. I guess the oil in the frame is heating up and causing the bearing to swell against the race. I'm going to dive in there and have a proper go at it. While in there, I'm going to get a billet top triple clamp that will bring a new set of bars up to my standards. New seat will be in the works along with grip heaters. Oh the joy of winter bike manipulation. NUTS |

Glad to see your still doing your best to fight off the recession.Does this bike have tapered steering bearings or sealed bearings? Just can't see the frame(heat) causing your problem and in the dead of winter to boot. Good luck. |

Tapered bearings, I need to get in there anyway and inspect things. I am unsure whether Todd fooled with them when he had the forks out for service. All I know is: it didn't occur in the beginning of the ride or at the end. The middle was pure H-E-double hockey sticks! Enduring this ugliness as the sun sets on the top of Bent Mtn, on a dirt road, covered in snow will sure give you the inspiration to tear that sucker open. NUTS |

So Charlie, I have the DR front end off and I had to remove the lower bearing cage and rollers with a set of lineman dykes. The bearing base is stuck on the steering shaft still. I tried heat with the torch and bent my new brass drifts trying to get it loose. Looks like the races are stuck pretty good in the steer stem too. Any advice? NUTS

Nuts, I don't envy your job. Ideally you would have just the stem and the lower clamp to work with and you could put it in a press and apply heat. If that's not possible then the only thing I can see would be to soak it with P B Blaster and a small cut off wheel(but you can't cut all the way down)and that's a problem. But a couple of cuts will relieve some of grip on the shaft and a hammer and a drift might spin the race. First option works best, but the tubes will have to go in order to put it in a press. Even then you need a lot of CAUTION.Good luck and patience is required. |

I have the lower triple off the fork tubes and am awaiting options. Looking for a press as we speak. NUTS |

Nuts, Be VERY careful pressing on the Alu.clamp.Block it as close to the shaft as possible and make damn sure the press and the shaft are PERFECTLY aligned. Go real slow. Try not to block anything with wood, as it absorbs the pressure and will prevent it from breaking loose.Heat and PB Blaster are your friends. Let me know how it goes. |

I got the bearing off the stem with a cutoff wheel and a little elbow grease. The stem and triple arein good shape too. I knocked the races out no problem once I had a 12" punch. The new bearings arrive tomorrow and I'll be back greasy. I ordered the top triple today as well as a new bar and throttle tube. Yeah, baby. Suzi's gonna have the year of her life! Negotiated for a new mountain bike today too. Thanks Mr. Raven! |

Thanks Charlie, When the parts arrive I'll head over to our friend at minute muffler and use his press to get the bearing back on. Ole Suzi better not have any headshake after this. NUTS |
