Greetings Socal Buellers, The crew present at the August SCAB meeting at Knowlwoods decide that the September first Sunday ride (Sunday, September 7th) would start with a pass by Newcombs ranch, and then continue on the north side of the mountains over to the North Side of the San Gabriel mountain ridge. Eric has flushed out some of the details, presented herein. Once upon a time, you could drive the entire length of Angeles Crest. But nasty weather up on the ridge and some washed out roads several years ago have caused the middle section to remain closed to this day. The theme of this ride is to connect the two gates. But since we can’t go past them, we’ll go in from both ends. It’ll be a long one, but it covers some excellent roads. We start at La Canada at 10AM, 9/7/08 here: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=N ewcomb's+Ranch,+CA&ie=UTF8&ll=34.205263,-118.199801&spn= 0.00181,0.001931&t=h&z=19 That’s the Shell Station in the link, someone I think said it might be closed. Right at the corner of Foothill and Angeles Crest is another gas station, so go there if the Shell isn’t open. Kickstands up at 10:15, we’ll head up to Newcombs Ranch and beyond until we hit the gate. I couldn’t find where the gate was in the attached map, Google still thinks you can go all the way through I guess. But from there, we backtrack to Angeles Forest road, go down towards Palmdale but never get all the way to the bottom. We’ll cutover on Mt Emma Rd, hug the north foothills, past Valyrmo onto Big Pines Hiway, and then back up to 2 from the other side. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&saddr=Angeles+Cres t+Hwy+%4034.330363,+-118.001270&daddr=Angeles+Fore st+Hwy+%4034.272230,+-118.158322+to:Angeles+Forest +Hwy+%4034.446380,+-118.102250+to:Mt+Emma+Rd+%4034 .506599,+-117.976680+to:Valyermo+Rd+%4034.435700,+ -117.836550+to:Big+Pines+Hwy+%4034.376177,+-117.68 6441+to:34.376312,-117.773437&hl=en&geocode=105673 18547406246101,34.330363,-118.001270%3B10054428862 06936623,34.272230,-118.158322%3B59812701102842826 35,34.446380,-118.102250%3B11310749580509049076,34 .506599,-117.976680%3B8590765797909232957,34.43570 0,-117.836550%3B2641507415239839980,34.376177,-117 .686441%3B&mra=mi&mrcr=5&mrsp=6&sz=11&sll=34.34230 2,-117.776871&sspn=0.462631,0.494385&ie=UTF8&t=h&z =11 Hopefully that last big link comes across After we get to the gate on the Wrightwood side, we’ll backtrack down towards Wrightwood and start back towards civilization on the 15 side of things. Several of us are still planning on attending the AMA races at Laguna Seca over the Sept 26-28th weekend. We have the same campspots at the bottom of the corkscrew, and the Love Shack is going to be there. Let me know if you’re riding up and I’ll put you in contact with others doing the same. Me, I’m flying into Oakland to pick up my Uly that’s been living up there doing dyno mapping for a few months. The following week is the Buell Inside pass track day in Las Vegas on Thursday. A ride is being planned to Zion National park on Friday, and American Sport Bike is sponsoring a dinner on Saturday instead of the usual American Sport Bike BBQ. More details are on the American Sport Bike home page, follow the links. You REALLY should plan on being in Vegas that weekend. See more details here: And there ARE still openings at the Vegas Inside pass track day. You don’t want to miss that if you can make it, there is no finer track day. You get to ride THEIR bikes, and they really take care of you with breakfast, lunch, drinks, etc. Don’t miss it! It’ll be a busy couple weeks. There are two other Inside pass track days this year as well, one at Willow Springs and one at Infineon. Several of us are attending both of those too, so sign up if you can. See you on the 7th!!
