Heard Mark and Brady talking about getting together to do some maintenance. I'm not due for much but can come help out. Or I can always find SOMETHING to do, perhaps cut my tail section and tune the throttle cables. Someone start the banter on dates and places... |

Maybe Springtime with warmer weather. I can host, but that means doing the garage cleanup I've avoided for the past year! My wife would be happy to see it finally done. Let me check schedule for the required 2-3 weekends... 1-2 weekends for the cleanup, plus a weekend for the Wrench Fest! |

Start a list of work we're thinking about. I've got wiring to do: HID headlight conversion, revised horn install, LED taillight, new turn signals. Brady was talking about the short XBS tail conversion, and I've asked the owner of the famous Florida Tommy K bike if he might be available to hang out at a Wrench day (owner Jason lives here in the valley). |

Speaking of a shorter tail, I am thinking of pulling the trigger on the ebay parts today or tomorrow to do the job. It will be a pretty decent job, by the looks of it. Also on the agenda is a new bar (maybe something like yours Paul), bar end mirrors, and cutting down the grater (maybe a group chop fest for all of us needing to clean up our rear ends?) As far as wrenching goes, I say the sooner the better. Lets get it done so that when it is nice every weekend we can just ride our beautiful bikes. I have a motorcycle jack and some tools if needed. Also, I would be happy to cook for the event. Anybody like grilled meat? |

Meat works! I'm all for a the group going after some tail together.. Wait that sounds wrong... I have some light electrical on the fun to do, More than willing to work on a bar swap if anyone wants to put a set of bars on (Pro Taper Carmichel bend is what I'm running). I may be do for Forks / 10 Service depending on when we do it... |

From PSSR's Bike Tech: All glass and plastic lenses must be taped or removed. Tape headlight and taillight and unplug or remove (i.e., make them non-operational). Remove rear view mirrors. Remove all quick detachable bags (i.e., tank and saddle bags). Brakes Pads and rotor in good condition, with minimum 80% pad material remaining. Pedal and lever pressure firm. Brake fluid clean and at proper level. Tires Minimum 80% of tread remaining. Proper inflation pressure - make sure tires are at manufacturer's recommended pressure for high speed riding; it's up to you to check them. Bearings Check wheels for side play. Check steering head and swing arm. Make sure handlebars and levers are tight. Check cables, wheel alignment, spokes, etc. Chains properly adjusted and sprockets in good shape. Bike must be in good working order with no loose parts and NO fluid leaks. PIR is a public park and has a 100 decibel limit during the days we hold classes; excessively loud bikes will be pulled off the track. This is strictly enforced by PIR management. For safety reasons, if your bike fails the technical inspection, you will not be allowed on the track, and your money will be forfeited. I'll be taking a close look at all of this when we do our wrench party, I'd hate to only have 78% brake pad left! |

I'd like to swap my primary and clutch covers out for black ones. I believe the black ones off an XB9 will work. Emailed a guy on eBay that had done it, but he had the dealer do it. Reading through the manual, it sounds like a lot of work so maybe it's not a wrench party kind of thing. Anyone had these covers off or done this already? |

Doesn't look like a lot of work... I'm not bad with a set of tools, and I've done (What I assume to be bigger) jobs in a few hours. Anyone know if the clutch covers are the same for the Blast? I have that Service manual and I'll take a look. |

Step 3. Remove cylinder heads. Step 4. Remove hydraulic lifters. Step 5. Check for minimum cam gear end play. This is straight from the Firebolt factory manual heading "Gearcase Cover and Cam Gears" section 3.18. Don't know why I would need to do all these steps to simply swap the cover, but I mentioned this on the XB part of BadWeb and a couple people confirmed that I had to. I don't want to mess with the gears, just swap the cover. Anyone know who I could verify this with? I would love to do this and will order the parts if it's really as easy as it looks. Would be a perfect time to do an oil change and other basic maint. as well. By the way, the guy I talked to through eBay said the dealer charged him like 400-600 labor to do the swap. Seems like an excessive amount of labor and cost for such a simply thing. (Message edited by hergy916 on February 29, 2008) |

Thee is obviously something tied to the covers that moves out of adjustment when you do it... I've got some black spray paint I'll give ya... |

Thanks, but I think I'd rather leave them the way they are rather than keep touching up the paint work all the time. Just seems crazy to have to do all of that. What if the gasket was leaking. Doesn't seem like you should have to do all that work to replace a leaky gasket. |

I would agree seems crazy just to remove a cover. I think I would paint it instead with some good quality high temp paint. Maybe I will do mine and we can see how well it holds up. I already have streaks on it from accidentally (being careless) spraying orange clean degrease on the primary cover. Got carried away while cleaning the header pipes and exhaust can. |

are you sure the "gearcase cover" is actually the "primary cover"? I know i have a primative buell motor but i'll be pulling my primary cover off in the near future, and I am not about to get into the cam gears or removing the cylinder heads and hydraulic lifters, that is extreme top and bottom end engine overhaul stuff! |

Graham, the primary cover is not the issue. it will come right off. The one of concern is the Gear Case cover for the Cam gears. I think it was just a typo calling it a primary and clutch cover since essentially it's the same thing The two covers are 1. Primary for the clutch and 2. Gear case for the cam gears |

Yep, sorry for the confusion. The primary cover seems pretty easy. Actually, in my manual, the pictures show a black cover for the primary. The two covers are the "primary" and "gear case" covers. Do we have someone at Latus I could ask about this? I haven't spent enough time with those guys to know any names really other than Kenny, but I know some of you have talked to others there. |

Aron, did you mask, scuff, and paint or disassemble the rear section. If you took it off to paint, how long did assembly or reassembly take? |

"Jim, its hard to get it off without taking the valvespring pressure off the cams....I've done it before but it seems the engine has to be rotated in a certain position so that all the cam lobes are close to off the lifter wheels.....then you have to be very careful pulling out on the cover so that the cam doesn't come out with it, and then yes the frame has to be removed and the top of the rockercovers removed... Kevin" This was the response I got from Kevin @ KD Fab (better known as Drummer). Looks like I may have to paint this side unless I can find a Buell mechanic that needs some stereo work done, or a heck of a lot of flowers. |

Kevin seems to be great people, I've talked to him a few times, so I'd trust him. Perhaps we'll see if Latus does anything for us on shop rate. But please don't hold your breath... |

This area has been quiet for a while, so figured I would check in and see where everyone was at with there wrenching needs. Looks like I will be opening my shop May 1st, so I was thinking about offering to have a PBR day there in May. Let me know if anyone is interested. I would have lots of tools available and indoor shop space. I won't have a lift of any kind, but I may have access to one if there is enough interest in it. Even if a "Wrench Party" isn't needed or wanted, I am hoping to have some kind of "Grand Opening" and will post an invite to all. Let me know if anyone is interested in organizing a wrench party at this point. I know I've got some work to do that I've been putting off all winter. |

I am finally opening my own Car Audio shop. Actually, I'm buying out an existing business and changing it into my own. We will do more than just audio and may get into home, but for now, I've got to clean up the mess created by the current owner. I am taking over May 1 and will probably be closed for a couple days to straighten out the inventory and change signs and whatever else can't get done between now and then. I'll keep everyone posted on this as I'm sure we will offer things you guys are interested in. |

Congrats Jim. I've got some cool (at least to me) old car audio stuff I would gladly donate to your business, like an original Audio Control EQX (strictly analog). Oh, and a "new in box" Rockford Punch amp from maybe 15 years ago. Oh, and the list goes on. For the wrench day - sounds great for sometime in May. |

Thanks Mark. I would be very interested in any older car audio gear, working or not, that may be seen as collectible to people in the car audio industry. I've been considering creating a "wall of fame" with some of the pieces I've collected over the years. Send me a list of what you have or bring it by next month if you like. Even if you have stuff that doesn't work and you just need to get rid of it, I'm going to be doing the same thing with a bunch of stuff I've collected and will dispose of anything you're not sure what to do with at the same time if you'd like. This wrench party idea could also be a good opportunity to do some ecm spy tuning for anyone that may be interested in that as well. Let me know what you all think. |
