View rider groups, bike preparation and gear requirements. Rider Groups Novice Group: 0 to 3 trackdays If you have no prior MOTORCYCLE track experience you MUST register in this group, NO EXCEPTIONS. Must be comfortable riding a motorcycle at highway speeds. We include an introduction to track safety rules prior to the first track session. Novice group receives class room time which includes critiquing of on-track skills. You will learn/review how to enter and exit the track safely, and use of the flags and their meanings. During your classroom and on-track sessions you can learn the "racing line", proper use of the throttle, braking, gear changes and selection as well as basic cornering techniques and body positioning. The pace is "comfortable". Everyone rides at his or her own pace with an emphasis on fun and learning. Novice group is structured. Novice group must attend initial classroom meeting and follow group rules. Intermediate Group: 3 to 10 trackdays/experienced "Sport Rider" This group is for people with enough track time that they are comfortable at an accelerated riding pace up to the beginning racer. Riders in this group will probably want to focus heavily on body position, setting up for turns, the racing line, and advanced throttle/braking control. Safe passing is permitted with at least 6 foot safety cushion. Passing is allowed on straight-aways and on the outside in turns. The track tempo is intermediate to fast. No licensed racers permitted in this group unless cleared by Buell Inside Pass Staff. Advanced Group: Considerable track experience/very aggressive "Sport Rider" You will gain valuable track time preparing for your next race, or just enjoy further refinement of your skills. The pace fast and there is a 6 foot safety custion inside and out of corners. Riders in this group must be comfortable passing and being passed in very close proximity to other riders and at high speeds. Riders not keeping the pace and/or riding erratic lines will be policed out and returned to the Intermediate Group. Riders in this group MUST wear a back protector. Bike Preparation 1. All bikes MUST pass technical inspection prior to admittance to the track. If your bike DOES NOT pass tech inspection, you will NOT receive a refund. 2. Tires and brakes must be in good condition. Tires should be at least 75% of new condition. Any tires that are bluing from excessive wear will be disallowed. Slicks are allowed in 85% plus condition. We will have on site tire service at each track day, so if your tires don't pass, you will have the opportunity to put on replacement tires to pass tech. 3. All glass, headlight, turn signals, and plastic lenses must be taped over or removed. Side mirrors must be removed for the advanced group and at least taped over for all other groups. 4. We recommend, but do not require removal of center stands for Novice and Intermediate. No bikes with center stands will be allowed in the Advanced/Racer Group due to the ground clearance issue. 5. All machines must have an operational handlebar mounted kill switch/button and self-closing throttle in good working condition. 6. Advanced and Intermediate group riders MUST use water or water wetter or a non-ethyl glycol based anti-freeze/coolant. Approved Poly Glycol brands are: Evans, 7th Gear, Liquid Performance, and Engine Ice. NO AUTOMOTIVE ETHYL GLYCOL BASED COOLANTS ARE ALLOWED. 7. All valve stems must have caps. 8. Wheel balance weights must be well-secured. 9. License plates must have bolts taped or be removed. 10. Advanced riders are required to safety wire drain plugs, oil filter and oil caps. Gear Requirements 1. Damage free BSI, DOT or SNELL full-face helmet with face shield. (Modular helmets are approved in the Novice group only) 2. Riding boots that fully cover the ankle. 3. Gauntlet style gloves with full wrist coverage. 4. One or two piece leathers. Two piece leather suits must zip together for Novice, Intermediate or Advanced groups. Ballistic nylon suits such as Joe Rocket, AeroStitch etc. are acceptable in the Novice and Intermediate Group only provided they are either one piece or two piece that zip together with 50% zipper contact, reinforced and padded shoulders, elbows, hips, and knee areas. No chaps. 5. Advanced group riders ARE REQUIRED TO WEAR A BACK PROTECTOR. Soft back pads sewn into suits are not enough. No back protector = no track time!!! 6. We recommend the use of chest protectors. |

If I read between the lines correctly there will be no passing at all in the novice group. That will suck, I'm not fast but I don't want to be held up by a squid that jacks his brakes in the middle of a corner and takes me out too. |

Last year at Mid Ohio in the Novice group they had two specified "passing zones" on two of the long straights. That worked out pretty well. |

Anybody think we could use a "pit bike" @ barber? I might have room for it.

Barber has some pretty strict rules about pit bikes and carts, seems some people couldn't leave the race out on the track. Controlled passing would be a fine idea I'm much relieved. That and I'd hate it if I was the squid. Nashville's WERA race is the weekend before the track day at Barber, I'll be going out there to watch if anyone else wants to go. |

I found a suspension guideline from Shawn Higbee in the May/June 05 issue of Fuell magazine, it's online at Buell.com. I wrote it down and will take it with me to Barber just don't know if it would only be a benefit to someone who can really use his suspension to the fullest(not me). |
